Understanding the Tarot Symbolism of Nudity in a Tarot Reading

In tarot reading, nudity often represents the inner self. In this regard it is the divine self, or authentic self. Depicting imagery of nudity symbolizes a state of freedom, vulnerability or spontaneity. In some cases, nudity can represent the nature of a person or it can indicate the nature of a relationship, particularly if there are more than two people depicted in a tarot spread or in a particular tarot card such as the Lovers. In the more traditional tarot decks, nudity is represented in the Devil card, the Sun card, the Lovers card, the Star card, the Judgment card and The World card.

Nudity has been depicted in art for centuries. Nudity has been used to depict human emotions and can represent a number of different themes including beauty, fragility, shame, fertility and power. Nudity can express inner longing or the desire to connect to someone else. It may also signify moving beyond conformity and often represents the expression of one’s true identity. Nudity can express inner shame or the embarrassment of one’s sexuality. On the other hand, it can also represent a person’s inner power or authority over others.

In tarot reading, there are very few cards that depict nudity to serve as a representation of anything negative or harmful. The one exception is the Devil tarot card. However, the Devil tarot card is often misunderstood and its interpretation should never be taken literally. The Devil tarot card represents an inner bondage (usually of one’s own making). These usually are addictions, emotional dependencies, fears or unconscious impulses. The male and female nude figures represent feelings of shame, self-deception, self-indulgence, false power, sexual exploitation or dominion over others.

If you ever had a dream of being naked in front of others, you are certainly not alone. In dream symbolism, naked dreams often represent feelings of exposure or vulnerability. Dreams in the particular group can either represent feelings of guilt over something shameful one has participated in or they can represent overcritical feelings about one's self. There may be an unconscious fear of failing, being ridiculed by peers, or not living up to social standards.

When it comes to tarot reading, nudity usually refers to the expression or sense of wholeness within the psyche or inner self. However, it’s important to really use your own intuition when interpreting cards that depict nude imagery. It can really help you learn a great deal about the person you may be reading for and, of course, can help you learn more about yourself. When the cards appear in a reversed position there is always room for exploration as there is typically some underlying issue of the self-identity that needs to be addressed.

Understanding the Tarot Symbolism of the Eagles

In Tarot reading, the Eagle is a symbol of strength, authority and power. Often linked with the lion, bull and serpent, the eagle can represent spiritual triumph or victory. The eagle is the king of all birds and appears in many Tarot decks such as the Morgan Greer and Rider White. The Eagles is most often associated with the Emperor and Empress Tarot cards. As a symbol of mastery and power, the eagle’s appearance in these cards clearly depicts their positions of authority. Both the Emperor and Empress represent the mother/father archetypes. The Eagles symbolic association to them represents their superior position not only within the Tarot deck itself but also within society and the family.

In Greek mythology, the Eagle was a messenger for the god Zeus. He was believed to carry important messages and was seen as a good omen. In Roman times, the Eagle was a symbol of sovereignty and dominance. The eagle’s physical features and its status as a keen hunter associate it to warrior symbolism and Warrior Gods such as Odin and the Roman Sun God. In the Native American culture, the feathers of an Eagle are believed to represent the rays of the Sun. The Aztecs associated the eagle with the rising sun, a destroyer of the “serpent of darkness.”

Another important symbolic element to the Eagles is its ability to cross the between the realm of spirit and the realm of man. Eagles have the unique ability to enter the spirit world and carry back important spiritual truths. Eagles are also commonly associated to the Divine. In some religions, the Eagle represents nearness to God, God consciousness and ascension. Eagles have mystical powers and are often believed to carry divine messages from a higher consciousness. Eagles can represent both physical and spiritual protection. It’s not uncommon to find it’s emblem in heraldry and coats of arms.

Understanding the Tarot Symbolism of the Lotus Blossom

In tarot reading, the lotus blossom is traditionally associated with the High Priestess tarot card. In the High Priestess tarot card, lotus blossoms are pictured above the pillars that flank the robed priestess on each side. Symbolically, the lotus blossom refers to the High Priestess' ability to bridge the gap into the unconscious realm. A lotus blossom is a dimorphic organism. It grows with it’s roots immersed in dark water, yet blossoms in the light and air above. This is symbolic of the Priestess' ability to transverse both realms. Beneath the surface of the water the roots of a blossom run deep. It is here where rests the soul or sense of self. From the depths of the unconscious the roots extend upward until they connect to the visible or conscious light. The Lotus is a symbol of divine birth into the world. Thus, the High Priestess reminds us the birth of our souls begins within the unconscious. This is the part of our selves that connects to divine creation and universal knowledge.

The High Priestess is also often associated to the Egyptian Goddess Isis. Isis was the great mother archetype for the Egyptians. Like the High Priestess, Isis was believed to have knowledge of all the great mysterious of the world. It's clear why the lotus blossom held great significance for the Egyptians. For them the Lotus was a symbol of birth and rebirth. In their creation myth, the sun emerged from the blossom of a giant lotus.

The Lotus is also one of the most widely recognized symbols in Indian culture. It serves as a symbol for creation, purity and realization. Its stem is symbolic of the rope or umbilical card that ties man to his roots, while its blossom represents all that he is capable of. Its petals open at dawn and then close at sunset. This is perceived as a symbol of the sun blooming out of the eternal cosmos.

The Lotus is also a fundamental symbol to Buddhist religion and philosophy. The dirty waters from which it grows are symbolic of man’s ignorance or unawareness. As the stem grows out of the cloudy waters, it symbolizes man’s capacity for lifting himself out of ignorance, denial and obliviousness. For the Buddhists, the Lotus blossom is a symbol for enlightenment and purity.

Understanding the Tarot Symbolism of the Forest in a Tarot Reading

In tarot reading, the forest symbolizes the unknown. It appears when one must journey into a period of uncertainty. Forests can represent any situation where you must find the courage to walk into the unknown. This can refer to relationships, career opportunities, or any circumstance that requires you to become willing to accept that you can not have any expectations on outcomes.

Forests can also represent emotions. In many cases, its appearance suggests that you may need to delve into the emotional aspects of your own life. If sadness or grief has been plaguing you, the forest is an invitation to begin the healing process. Healing can only occur when one gets willing to confront the wounds of the past and come to terms with one’s most personal issues. This is often a difficult process as it is not somewhere we would ordinarily want to explore on our own.

Forests are dark and daunting. What lies within them remains unseen until one enters into them. From a psychological perspective, the forest is a symbol of the unconscious and often references one’s internal world. We are responsible for bringing light into the depths of our subconscious. This is accomplished through self-awareness. Part of the process of self-development includes understanding our own unconscious motivations and belief systems. It is on this level that we can make the most profound changes in our life.

Forests are also considered to represent the feminine. This is clearly depicted in the Empress tarot card. Not only are forests abundant in vegetation and foliage, the soil is rich and dense. Consequently, forests can be associated to mother earth. The feminine is also associated to the unconscious and can represent the female part of the psyche.

Finally, forests can symbolize a place of magic and adventure. At times they can be perceived as dangerous and at other times that can be the source for new opportunities. They can be healing or they can be perilous. In either case, they always produce personal transformations.

In ancient Egypt, the cat was associated to the goddess Isis and Bast (the cat headed Goddess). The cat was believed to be sacred and was connected to the moon. As a symbol, the cat served as a representation of love, happiness, fertility and protector of the home. Both the Greeks and Romans associated the cat with the Goddess Artemis. Artemis was a great hunter and personified feminine wisdom and knowledge. In Celtic cultures, there was also an appreciation for the cat. They associated the cat to the Goddess Brighad and considered cats to be a symbol of friendship and companionship.

During the medieval times, however, the cat was associated to witches. Because of their ability to hunt at night, they were believed to be influenced by dark forces. Some Native American tribes believed that cats had magical powers and could set curses on people. The early American Pilgrims also had negative views of the cat and considered them to be unlucky and predicative of bad omens.

Symbolically, cats can represent death, rebirth and resurrection. This is often associated to the fact that cats do, indeed, have nine lives. As nocturnal hunters, cats can also be associated to darkness and night. Darkness and/or the night often represent the unconscious, the dream world or things that remain hidden or a mystery. Their association to the moon represents femininity and intuitive knowledge. Cats can also be a symbol of magic and healing.

The cat’s disposition is independent, calculating, patient and swift. They can teach us about flexibility and adaptability. They often remind us to let go of rigid thinking or inflexible behavior. Their independence and reserve is often seen as aloofness. In truth, they can teach us about setting boundaries or emotionally detaching from people or situations that are harmful.

Understanding the tarot symbolism and tarot meanings of the Nine of Swords tarot card.

One of the more ominous cards that can come up in a tarot reading is the Nine of Swords tarot card. This is particularity true for those who are unfamiliar with the Tarot. After all, other than perhaps Death or the Devil tarot card, few other images found in tarot depict such a strong sense of dread and sorrow as the Nine of Swords. However, the true meaning of the Nine of Swords is really not as bad of a card as it may appear. Its meaning has to do more about inner emotional turmoil rather than any outer circumstances that may be a threat to our well being.

In its true sense, the Nine of Swords tarot card represents worries or anxiety. More often then not, these feelings are coming from inner anxiety caused by dread, self-doubt and indecisiveness. There may also be issues with poor sleep or troubling nightmares. In some cases, the Nine of Swords can pertain to issues of grief and loss. Whatever the cause may be, the Nine of Swords really reflects our personal fears or anxieties that are more a product of our own thinking rather than any real external threats that can physically harm us.

In traditional decks, the Nine of Swords depicts a female figure sitting up in bed, her hands over her face, sobbing from some unknown circumstance. Above her hangs nine oppressing swords which clearly represent the impact of her troubles. This is one of the darker images in the tarot deck, both symbolically and literally. The darkness relates to the fact that it is the middle of the night which is a reflection of her emotions.

Symbolically, however, the darkness or reference to night also suggests that there are unconscious implications. Dreams or night imagery can be a metaphor for the realm of our unconscious mind. This realm can be ruled by our emotions and psyche. It points to the fact that our inability to sort out what may be real from our unconscious fears can be a cause for emotional distress.

Thus, the Nine of Swords really suggests that our own fears can lead us to lose our ability to decipher the true from the false. This happens when the unconscious has overwhelmed the conscious leaving us with feelings of doubt, blame and self-loathing. Left unchecked, these feelings can overwhelm us preventing self-awareness, insight and perspective.

If we want to heal and move forward, in the end we must find a willingness to come to terms with our unconscious fears, feelings or past trauma.

Understanding Tarot Symbolism Found In The Fool Tarot Card

In terms of tarot symbolism, the Fool Tarot Card is one of the most significant. As the first card of the Major Arcana, the Fool serves as a symbolic illustration of our beginning stage of development in our journeys through life. He characterizes the child found within us and he is the hero in the Tarot story. When the Fool appears in a tarot reading, he represents the soul which needs to grow within us. He is the seeker, constantly striving to reach new levels of enlightenment. His is there to remind us that in order too attain knowledge, we must stay true to our heart and follow our own path to wherever it may lead us.

Tarot Symbolism of Zero. The Fool is the only tarot card associated with zero. The Fool's numerical association with zero has tremendous symbolic significance. Zero represents consciousness and, in this regard, it is the conscious state of being present without the influence of the ego. This is the first stage of development in which one can become aware of their own self, separate from their mother and separate from pure unconscious existence. This is the stage in which there is nothing but simple presence. It is the act of simply being. In Tarot reading, the number zero represents new beginnings or endings. Thus, the Fool’s journey can repeat itself throughout one’s own journey.

Tarot Symbolism of The Cliff. The cliff the Fool treads upon represents his fall into human form. This is the stage in which the Fool must become conscious of his own self. He is unknowing, innocent and unbiased. He has no experience within the world and his journey lies before him. On another level, the cliff represents the Fools’ inability to ascertain the risks that he unknowingly faces. The Fool can be both optimistic and reckless. In tarot readings, the symbol of the cliff can also pertain to leaps of faith. The cliff always reminds us of divine intervention and our conscious contact with something greater than our selves.

Tarot Symbolism of The Dog. Another important symbol of the Fool Tarot card is the dog that remains by the Fool’s side. The dog is the Fool’s trusted ally, constantly reminding the Fool of the dangers that lie ahead. Symbolically, he represents our instincts. His presence is a symbol of our internal gut reactions to situations that can be harmful or dangerous.

Tarot Symbolism of The Bag. The bag the Fool carries is the Fool’s early memories of pre-verbal experiences. In this sense, the bag represents the Fools’ unused knowledge. As the Fool journeys through life, he places everything he learns into his bag. The bag will serve as his container for his experiences. This body of knowledge will, ultimately, form his identity and unique perspective of the world.

Tarot Symbolism of The White Rose. In the Fool’s hand there is a white rose. The rose is a symbol of one’s soul or unconscious. A white rose represents purity. This is childlike innocence of the Fool. There is an organic wholesomeness. The ego has not tainted the Fool’s perspective of the world. The Fool reminds us to constantly treasure the child within us and to see the world through his eyes: with purity, excitement and a carefree attitude.

In Tarot reading, the Fool always reminds us to keep an open mind and be willing to take some risks. He is there to encourage a change in perspective, one that is closer to one’s heart. His message is always one of purity, innovation and creativity. When you see the Fool, be willing to try the unexpected and to gain knowledge from the experience.

Understanding Tarot Symbolism Found In The Magician Tarot Card

In tarot reading, the Magician is the card of manifestation. He represents the development of one’s first sense of conscious awareness. In this regard, he has become aware of his own, unique sense of self. The Magician Card encourages one to use their intellect to master the world around them. When he appears in a tarot card reading, he is a card of creation, constantly shifting the energies around him to manifest his desires.

The Magician’s counterpart is the female High Priestess. Thus, the Magician represents the masculine while the High Priestess represents the feminine. As a masculine figure, the Magician Tarot Card represents action. Unlike the High Priestess who prefers to go inward to gather knowledge from her intuitive nature, the Magician prefers to explore all that is outside of him. He is naturally curious and is constantly searching for the mystical and secretive elements in the natural world. His goal is to understand all that surrounds him and ultimately use this knowledge to master his world.

Tarot Symbolism of the Number 1: The Magician Tarot card is associated the number one. In the tarot card deck, he is the fist numbered card of the Major Arcana. One’s represent individuality, creativity, originality, unity, power, knowledge and birth. His symbolic association to the number one references his divine connection to the Divine. Although his goal is to master the physical realm, he still remains tied to Divine Consciousness. In a tarot card reading, the Magician represents the union with Divine consciousness. He is the conscious link between the world of spirit and the world of man.

Tarot Symbolism of the Rose and Lily: The rose and the lily have important symbolic functions in the Magician tarot card. The rose represents the Magician’s passion for life. It is a feminine attribute and is often associated to birth and materialization. In this regard, the rose represents the emergence of the Magician’s sense of self. Roses can also represent the physical senses. The Lily, on the other hand, has masculine attributes. Lilies represent both the spirit world and the Magician’s pursuit of knowledge. In a tarot card reading, lilies represent purity. For the Magician, the lily is symbolic of both truth and humility.

Tarot Symbolism of the Table and Elements: The Table which stands before the Magician is a symbol of concrete reality. Tables are also associated to the number four which represents manifestation. Upon the table rests a cup, sword, rod and pentacle. These are a representation of the four elements. The Magician uses these elements during his process of creation. They represent the Magician’s power to master his own skills and manifest his energy.

Tarot Symbolism of the Wand and Infinity Sign: The Wand of the Magician is a symbol of the Magician’s connection to Divine Spirit. In one hand he points his wand to the heavens and in the other hand he points to the four elements resting on the table before him. Symbolically, this represents the Magicians ability to use divine energy to manifest in the physical world. In a tarot card reading, the Magician represents manifestation on the earthly plane. However, there is always an exchange of energy. This is symbolically represented by the infinity sign. This exchange of energy occurs between the realm of spirit and the physical world. The Magician has the ability to move between these two worlds. This unique skill enables the Magician to remain adaptable and flexible through any situation that he is confronted with.

In a tarot card reading, The Magician represents the utilization of one’s skills. He is a reminder of the power that is within you. He often signifies the need for a self-confidence and adaptability. Please also see the tarot card meanings section to learn more about the Magician.

Understanding Tarot Symbolism Found In The High Priestess Tarot Card

In term of tarot symbolism, The High Priestess card is imbued with rich representative imagery and meaning. She is the embodiment of deep mystery and secrecy. When she appears tarot reading, the High Priestess is the card of dreams, visions and the representation of all the mysteries of the universe. She represents the intuitive feminine aspects of our psyches. Developmentally, she refers to one’s inner voice and intuitive consciousness. This is the realm of inner knowledge.

In tarot reading, the High Priestess is a feminine archetype. Unlike the Magician, who is active in nature, the High Priestess prefers passivity. She is associated to the unconscious and her receptive nature makes her the ideal feminine symbol. Her receptive character enables her to peer into the secretive and mysterious elements of the natural world.

Tarot Symbolism of The Number Two: The High Priestess Tarot Card is the second card in the Major Arcana. Her association to the number two represents balance, harmony and duality. In Tarot reading, twos often refer to polarity and, in the case of the High Priestess tarot card, the number two refers to the dualism found within the natural world and within the psyche. The High Priestess represents a crossroad where two opposites meet. She has the ability to explore each polar opposite and use this energy to create something entirely new.

Tarot Symbolism of The Two Pillars: In traditional tarot decks, the High Priestess is depicted as sitting between two pillars, one black and one white. The pillars refer to the duality so often represented in the natural world: light and dark, night and day, birth and death, and positive and negative. Psychologically, the two pillars refer to both the masculine and feminine aspects of the psyche as well as the conscious and unconscious parts of the mind. Symbolically, this refers to her ability of the High Priestess to delve in to the realm of the unconscious and carry its wisdom into conscious awareness.

Tarot Symbolism of The Veil: Behind the seated High Priestess rests a veil. The veil, symbolic of all that remains unseen in the natural world, conceals her hidden knowledge. The High Priestess serves as the feminine guardian for secret wisdom. Her primary purpose is guard all that is considered holy. In tarot reading, she is the wise teacher and urges one to look beyond their own veil of rational thinking and peer into their own unconscious wisdom.

Tarot Symbolism of The Moon: In most tarot decks, the High Priestess is associated with the moon which is typically depicted by the crescent moon that lies by her feet. The moon represents the feminine, emotional, unconscious and intuitive elements of our psyches. The High Priestess reminds us to rely on the moon’s subtle light. This is the light of intuition. In a Tarot reading, the High Priestess represents our own inner knowledge. Her association to the moon suggests that hidden knowledge can always be found within our own selves.

The moon also represents things that may remain unseen. The moon is feminine night and often represents the shadowed aspects to psyches. In tarot reading, the moon can be a symbol of the feminine mother, the inner child, and the influence of one’s unconscious.

Tarot Symbolism of The Scroll: Upon the lap of the High Priestess rests a scroll. In traditional tarot decks, the scroll is associated to the Hebrew Torah. This refers to the High Priestess’s need to uphold the divine laws of the natural world. It is also the parchment in which she records her memories. This represents the High Priestess’s body of knowledge and experience. She serves as a container for the secretive and mysterious knowledge reflected in our world.

For more on the High Priestess, see the Major Arcana Tarot Card Meanings section.

She is the symbol or creativity, abundance and artistic endeavors.

Understanding the Tarot Symbolism found in the Emperor Tarot Card

In Tarot symbolism, the Emperor Tarot card depicts the male archetype or father figure. He is a card of strength and vigor. His imagery is imbued with masculine elements such as the horned ram, armor, and scepter. In tarot reading, the Emperor represents control over ones surroundings and the ability to utilize one’s rational thinking process. He is our inner masculinity, animus and the parts or our selves that are ruled by the mind.

Traditionally, the Emperor’s Tarot card meanings refer to leadership, authority and order. He often represents the structure in our own lives and can represent the need to find the power within oneself. He is an archetype of self-confidence and represents mastery and dominion over the world he rules. He prefers to utilize his intellect and rational processes and tends to discard the realm of emotions. He is organized, objective, and rational. He has created his world through restraint and self-will. In tarot reading, he can represent a male authority figure or father figure.

Tarot Symbolism of Four

The Emperor Tarot card is associated to the number four. Four is the number of structure and strong foundations. Four also refers to the power of manifestation and realization. In this regard, the Emperor Tarot card can refer to accomplishment and vision. In a Tarot card reading, The Emperor is a symbol of authority over the tangible, physical plane of existence. He has the power to make things happen. His association to the number four symbolically refers to his ability to organize and structure the world around him

Tarot Symbolism of the Rams

In traditional Tarot decks, the Emperor is depicted with a Ram or Rams heads. Usually, its imagery is associated to the throne on which the Emperor sits. The Rams head is a symbol for Aries, the first sign of the zodiac. Aries, who is often considered the leader of the zodiac, rules the head. Thus, he is a sign of intellectual thinking. Aries is energetic, powerful, and aggressive. He fully engages himself in life and prefers to face things head on. The Aries character is forceful and determined. His greatest vulnerability, however, is rigidity and insensitivity to others. In tarot reading, the Emperor can be harsh and critical. He can represent the overbearing father or mate that dominates his significant others.

Tarot Symbolism of Armor

Underneath the Emperor’s garments is a full suit of armor. The Armor symbolically represents the Emperor’s ability to get into action and defend all that he holds dear. His armor also refers to his association to Aries. Like Aries, the Emperor is a warrior and will rise to any challenge that comes his way. In tarot reading, the Emperor’s armor is also a sign of his nobility and status. It’s a symbol that sets him apart from the common man.

Tarot Symbolism of the Scepter and Orb

In one hand the Emperor holds a scepter and in the other an orb. The Emperor’s scepter is a symbol of his authority and dominion. The orb is a symbol of the world he dominates. The scepter is masculine and the orb feminine. The Emperor holds these contrasting elements. Symbolically this refers to the Emperor’s ability to balance all things.

Understanding the Tarot Symbolism of the Hierophant Tarot Card

In older decks, the Hierophant Tarot card was once referred to as the Pope or High Priest. In Tarot symbolism, the Hierophant is a symbol of the Spiritual Father. He is the wise teacher and, for many, he is the symbol of the religious institution. In Tarot readings, the Hierophant reminds us that there is much more to life than the ordinary. His teachings remind us that we must abide by spiritual principles in order to gain a deeper understanding of our purpose in this world. He is the card of social order, conformity and traditional values. He is also an important symbol for spiritual growth.

Tarot Symbolism of the Clergyman and Pillars

One of the most striking features of the traditional imagery of the Hierophant is his position. The Hierophant sits above two clergymen. These two clergymen or religious figures are symbolic of both religion and mysticism. In this regard, both are considered to be valuable and holy. More importantly, one can not function without the other.

Like the High Priestess, the positions of the pillars represent a doorway or entrance into the unknown or mystical. Behind the Hierophant is all that remains unknown or unlearned. In front of him is the known. It is well organized, structured and orderly. This is the realm of conformity.

Tarot Symbolism of the Staff and the Hierophants Hand Position

When looking upon the Hierophant Tarot card you can not help but recognize his hand gesture as it points to the heavens. Symbolically, this reference the Hierophants association to the realm of the Heaven or the realm of spirit. In this regard, he represents the relationship between one’s higher consciousness and their ego. He is the ultimate symbol of balance as he has learned how to listen to his inner reality without compromising the importance of his rational mind. His gesture to the heavens symbolizes the importance of spiritual principles and that these principles have authority over all others.

His golden staff further illustrates his authority over spiritual matters. Some believe that the multi-crossed staff represents different levels of consciousness. Traditionally, however, the three crosses on the staff represent rituals or rites of passage. Should one wish to achieve spiritual enlightenment, they would have to undergo various rites of passages to attain spiritual wisdom.

The Tarot Symbolism of the Keys

Beneath the Hierophants feet rests two keys. They are linked and cross one another. Symbolically, these represent the keys to heaven, the Divine, or the House of God. These are the keys to spiritual truths which the Hierophant always holds sacred. Yet, at the same time, the Hierophant acknowledges the significance of the secular and teaches us how to implement the spiritual in our ordinary lives. He represents the link between our outer perceptions and our inner truths.

The fact that the keys are crossed represents two paths or two ways of living. One must become conscious of the decisions or choices that lie before them and that very action must be made in accordance to one’s value systems.

Understanding the Tarot Symbolism and Tarot Card Meanings of the Lovers Tarot Card

When it comes to Tarot reading, there appearance of the Lovers tarot card often brings excitement as its meaning often pertains to unions and romantic partnerships. In fact, the Lovers tarot card can refer to marriages, true love and the experience of finding one’s soul mate. However there is much more to the Lovers tarot card than just the concept of love. The Love tarot card also references duality, healing and individuation. It is the card of choices forever reminding us that we must apply spiritual principles in our own lives to help us determine the right from the wrong.

Tarot Symbolism of the Tree of Knowledge, the Snake and the Garden of Eden

In the traditional tarot deck, the Lovers tarot card depicts a nude man and female standing below an angel. Behind the woman is a tree containing a serpent. It’s not hard to associate this imagery with the Tree if Knowledge and the Garden of Eden. This reference confirms the Lovers tarot card’s association to the choices or decisions we make in our own lives. When Adam and Eve ate the fruit from the Tree of Knowledge they learned how to discern what is good and what is evil. In this process, their own innocence was sacrificed. They no longer had the opportunity to live as children. They were forced to take responsibility for their own selves. Thus, the Lovers tarot card denotes the need to become an adult and make decisions based on clear thinking. The goal is always to choose wisely.

The Tree of knowledge can also be interpreted as the Tree of Life. The Tree of Life connects all life and is a symbol for God’s wisdom. It is also associated to the Kabbalah and represents esoteric knowledge and the laws of nature. The Tree of Life contains the spiritual spheres of God’s great design and discloses how he implemented these spiritual spheres to create the world.

It’s important to note, that the symbolism of the serpent does not refer to the Devil. Rather, it is symbolic of the Rod of Asdepius. Asdepius was the son of Apollo and was skilled in the practice of medicine. In the case of the Lovers tarot card, the snake represents healing, medicine, and rejuvenation. Thus, the Lovers tarot card can refer to healing, particularly in relationships.

The Tarot Symbolism of The Angel Raphael, Mountain and The 12 Flames

Above the man and woman is the Angel Raphael who is a symbol of truth and healing. Here the Lovers tarot card references the concept of duality and wholeness. The Angel Raphael can communicate to the female through her intuitive awareness. The female is a symbol of the feminine parts of our psychic. She is the intuitive subconscious. The female then communicates to the male who represents the conscious and male parts of our psyche. She prepares him to go out into the world and act in accordance to the spiritual principles they have been encouraged to live by. In essence, the female, our intuitive self, is the messenger of divine inspiration. The union between the male/female parts of our psyches represents wholeness and the integration of our psyches or personalities.

Between the man and woman rests a large mountain. The mountain is a symbol of path to achievement, integration and the spiritual challenges we are confronted with in our lives. Behind the man is a burning bush with 12 flames that represent the 12 months of the Zodiac.

In summary, the Lovers tarot card helps us make important decisions in our lives. The female parts of our psyche, or inner self, help us connect to divine intervention and insight. The male, or conscious part of the psyche, looks to the female or intuitive self to help guide him in the world. The Lovers tarot card depicts the need to establish a communication between the unconscious and conscious. When this relationship is harmonious, there is balance and objectivity. With this one then has the ability to make the right choices for their own lives.

Understanding the Tarot Symbolism of the Strength Tarot Card in Tarot Readings

The Strength tarot card is one of the most powerful tarot cards in the tarot deck. It refers to one’s ability to find courage and resilience under the most difficult circumstances. It can often reflect the true fortitude of one’s inner being. In tarot readings, the strength card is a sign that one’s raw instincts must be mastered through sensitivity and gentleness. It’s important to note, however, that the power of one’s raw instincts should not be ignored nor detested. They are a part of us that must be understood in order to fully grasp the human condition and to achieve inner balance.

In traditional tarot symbolism, a lion’s mouth is gently grasped by a maiden. Although interpretations can vary, most believe she is closing the lion’s mouth. The Strength tarot card refers to balance, discipline and self-control. The lion represents our primordial drives and the young maiden represents the “higher” mind or one’s conscience that can tame it.

In tarot readings, the Strength card encourages self-awareness, particularly in reference to one’s primal motivations, emotions and impulses. In this regard, the higher mind serves to temper them and redirect its energy in a positive way. The Strength tarot card thus represents the balance between the intuitive feminine and rational masculine parts of our selves. Inner strength comes from the harmony and equilibrium of these two aspects of the self.

Tarot Symbolism of the Lion

In tarot symbolism, the Lion can be a symbol of our animal natures. The Lion represents the life force and inner energy which propels us forward. It is the life instinct or primal “id” and often can be interpreted as one’s raw passion or motivating forces.

The Lion can also be a symbol of courage and bravery. The lion is the epitome of raw power and he uses this energy as a means to face obstacles, struggles and/or confrontations. In many ways the lion is our ally as we rely on his courage to follow the path of our own heart.

The Lion is associated to the masculine element of fire. Fire belongs to the Suit of Wands and the wands can refer to one’s sexuality, fertility and potency. As a result, the Lion not only represents the male parts on one's self, it can also represent one’s sexuality and the more aggressive side of our natures. In some cases the image of a lion can serve as a warning that one’s need to conquer or overpower others is causing unnecessary conflict or dissent.

Finally, the symbol of the lion can also be associated to the astrological sign of Leo. In tarot readings, the Strength card can be affiliated to a person who was born under the astrological sign of Leo or to someone whom may have the personality traits of a Leo.

Tarot Symbolism of the Maiden

The Strength tarot card also represents the power of the feminine elements of the psyche. This is clearly represented by the young maiden who gently grasps the lion. Her power comes from a higher consciousness or higher mind. It is from this source that she manages and subdues the raw instincts of the lion. She is a reminder that true power comes from diplomacy, balance and consideration.

Her grasp upon the lion is neither aggressive nor domineering. Rather, it is benign. This reflects the concept of love and trust. The maiden opens herself to the potent male impulses, but gentleness prevails through her feminine love and kindness. The Strength tarot card can often imply that there needs to be a greater sense of self-love or self-care. In some circumstances the Strength card can reflect a denial of certain aspects of the self or can simply be a symbol of self-loathing. The Strength card can serve as a reminder that all parts of ones self must be loved and honored.

Tarot Symbolism of the Crown of Flowers

Upon the maidens head, rests a crown of flowers. This is a symbol of the maiden’s association to the Empress. The Maiden represents the young Empress, who is learning how to master her feminine power. The flowers are a symbol of her association to nature and fertility.

Tarot Symbolism of Leminscate

A leminscate rests above the maiden’s head. As a symbol of spirituality, the leminscate represents the need to apply spiritual principles to all situations. More importantly, the leminscate reminds one that spiritual principles can provide power and strength that is infinite. It is also serves as a warning that without spirituality as a guide, power and control can be misused.

In tarot reading, the dog is a symbol of faithfulness and watchful protection.

The symbol of the dog in art and mythology dates back for centuries. Historically, they have been symbols of loyalty, faithfulness and protection. They are also considered to be great warriors and can be a symbol of an expert hunter. In the middle ages, dogs were associated to the priesthood due to the priests’ vigilance in protecting people from the influence of the devil.

In many ancient cultures, the dog was associated to death. Dogs were believed to have the capacity to look into the spirit realm, see ghosts, and warn their masters of invisible dangers. In Greek mythology, Cerberus, the three headed dog, guarded and protected the gates of the dead. He served as a guide for those who crossed over.

When it comes to tarot reading, the symbol of the dog is perceived as a sign of faithfulness, devotion and protection. He can appear in tarot cards that depict the family and/or home. In this regard, he is a symbol of fidelity, loyalty and watchfulness. He can also represent our loyal friends, partners, and intimate relationships. He can represent home life or domestication.

The two most significant cards that depict the image of the Dog is the Fool tarot card and the Moon tarot card. In tarot reading, the Fool’s dog represents a need for caution. He is there to remind the Fool to not become careless or irresponsible. Psychologically, the image of the Dog can represent the voice of reason.

The Moon Tarot card, however, depicts both a dog and a wolf. Symbolically, this represents two opposites: the wolf represents the more primitive parts of our psyche while the dog represents the rational. The Moon’s message reminds us that we must be conscious of both parts of ourselves. If not, we are vulnerable to inner conflict or a lack of balance.

Symbolism of the Moon in Tarot Reading

Since the beginning of time, the Moon has represented the great mystery of our existence. Largely associated to the feminine, the Moon is the great Goddess reflecting her gentle and subtle light upon us. She is the ultimate mirror, tenderly reflecting our consciousness back to us. She is the feminine night and represents the shadowed aspects to our very natures. In Tarot reading, she is our great mother, our inner child, and the power of our unconscious.

The Moon’s realm is that of night and her light is not really her own. Rather it is borrowed from the great god of the Sun. Therefore, its energy is softer, less direct, and appears within the darkness of the night. It is a dim illumination that lights the path to self. The Moon is sensitive to all emotion. She always encourages one to go deeper, to find their source and find their truth. Her receptivity makes her the perfect nurturer. Although her light can be penetrating, it can also be healing. In a Tarot reading, she is associated to the crab and crayfish. They are hard on the outside, but remain soft and vulnerable within their protective shell.

When the Moon Tarot Card appears in a Tarot reading, there is often an association to deception, confusion and inner conflict. The Moon Tarot card represents the elements of isolation and subjection. Similar to the path of the Hermit, the Moon requires us to rely on inner light. This is the light of our own intuition. The Moon asks us to be courageous as her path is dimly lit. We are forced to face our inner fears and conflicting feelings. Yet, if we embark on the Moon’s journey, her path can lead us to a higher consciousness.

When you apply the Moon to our journeys towards enlightenment, she represents a major turning point. She is our personal spiritual evolution. If we hesitate on our path and become lost in the Moon’s beauty, we remain stuck and are unable to grow. In a Tarot reading, the Moon refers to our own self-deceptions. We must learn to identify what is an illusion and what is truth. If we force ourselves forward, however, we can come to recognize the Moon’s wisdom and message. We are the source of our own inner knowledge. We must have faith in our own intuition.

Tarot Card Meanings: Symbolism of The Tarot

While the interpretations of the Tarot cards can differ from tarot reader to tarot reader, there are many universal themes that remain constant. The more knowledge you have about the Tarot's imagery and symbolism, the easier it will be to grasp their meanings.

Before we move on, however, I would first recommend getting to know your cards intimately. Keep a tarot journal. It is totally acceptable to invent your own tarot meanings. The best tarot readers are the ones that utilize free association. Free association is similar to the concept of a stream of consciousness. During this process you allow your mind to gather information about the cards without any judgment or hesitation. Your ability to read the cards of the Tarot will largely depend on your own intuition. The more you become familiar with the cards, the easier it will be to identify their symbolism and meanings. As I have discussed before, these are images that reflect universal themes. In tarot reading, it is just as important to be familiar with tarot symbolism as it is to trust your intuition.

Now let’s move on. As a beginning tarot reader, I was fortunate to have worked with an expert. She identified elements in the Tarot Cards that had illustrative themes. She taught me how to recognize the significance of distinctive features that comprise the overall picture on each card. After years of study, I have broken these features down into four categories: animals, colors, the landscape, and the distinctive imagery that appears throughout the tarot. It is important to note that there are hundreds of tarot decks. Obviously not all decks have the same imagery. Often, the artist and/or author will develop their own imagery that reflects their interpretation of specific tarot card meanings. That’s what makes the tarot such a fascinating tool for divination. The symbolic interpretations that I will provide are really just suggestions. Ultimately, you, as the tarot reader, will have to rely on your own associations for the tarot cards.

ANIMALS IN TAROT READING
Let’s begin with animals. Animals reflect our instinctive natures. They can expose our primal needs, desires and behaviors. In a tarot reading, animals offer insight into our characters, often shedding light on how are natures and behaviors are influencing a situation.
Birds: Birds are associated with thoughts and spiritual aspirations. Birds in flight represent freedom from limitation.
Bull: Bulls are associated with power, fertility, permanence, charging ahead, and generosity. They can also be associated with stubbornness and denial. Whenever you see a bull in tarot reading, there is typically an association to powerful forces working in ones life.
Butterflies: The image of transformation. Butterflies may indicate a change of thought, change of action, or change of circumstance.
Crab: The crab is the astrological sign of cancer. Crabs are unique because they have mastered their ability to escape a situation by moving sideways. They also can be defensive and overprotective. They have the remarkable ability to move through water, thus they have the tools to move through their emotions.
Dog: The dog is the faithful companion. They represent loyalty and protection. Dogs can also represent the need to have trust and may signify the arrival of a new helper.
Dragon: Dragons represent the use of our intelligence. They symbolize protection and security. Their shedding of their skin can reflect a transformation of some kind.
Eagle: Eagles are the bridge between heaven and earth. In a tarot reading, Eagles can signify the need to look for hidden spiritual truths. Eagles can represent creativity, healing and freedom. They may represent a need for courage.
Fish: The fish is the astrological sign of Pisces. Because fish live in the water, they usually reflect our emotional world. Fish can represent the subconscious, the dream world, creativity and prosperity.
Horse: The horse represents travel and personal power. Typically, when a horse is drawn in a tarot reading, there will be movement. An action might be required or there may be a change in circumstance.
Lion: The lion is the astrological sign of Leo, which rules the heart. Lions represent the need for courage in the face of apprehension. The Lion may also indicate the need to release stress. The lion is a leader and enjoys seeing his supporters achieve success.
Salamander: Salamanders represent the need to connect our emotions with our belief system. When they are drawn in a tarot reading, it may indicate a time to reevaluate our behaviors and perceptions. Do they match up with one’s true feelings?
Snake: The snake typically represents transitions or transformations on one’s life journey. The snake may also represent fertility, the need for a more masculine approach to a situation, and can identify the areas in our life where we may need to adjust and/or adapt.

	COLORS IN TAROT READING
In addition to animal symbolism, there is also the use of color in tarot symbolism. Colors can be incredibly useful for identifying tarot card meanings. Color influences our emotions, our behaviors and how we react to various people, things and ideas.

White: Purity, joy, truth, peace, enlightenment, neutrality.
Black: Death, power, emptiness, sorrow. It is the color of night and may refer to things that are hidden. It is also the color of renewal and transformation.
Blue: Feelings, the unconscious, intuition, unity, harmony, reflection, tranquility. It can also represent coldness, depression and mourning.
Green: Fertility, growth, abundance, nature, wealth, money, youth. It is the color of spring and may refer to a new beginning.
Orange: Ambition, action, forcefulness, energy, enthusiasm, security and balance.
Purple: The color of royalty. It represents justice, nobility, mystery, pride and envy.
Red: Passion, strength, anger, sexuality, aggression, danger, masculinity and love.
Yellow: The color of illumination. It represents, joy, happiness, optimism, intelligence. It may also represent weakness, cowardice and fear.
Gold: The color of the universe and sun. It represents realization, success, and spiritual learning.
Silver: Mystery, contemplation, hidden wisdom, femininity and intuition.
Gray: Sadness, mourning, emotional turbulence, humility, old age and dullness.

LANDSCAPE IMAGERY IN TAROT READING
Now that you have grasped the basic symbolism for animals and color, let’s examine the landscape imagery of the Tarot. When I refer to the tarot landscape, I am referring to the background imagery. It's an important element that often gets overlooked. The landscape of the Tarot deepens the interpretations of each card. It provides yet another level of meaning and association.
Clouds: Thought, ideas, divine messages and intervention. Clouds can also indicate confusion and lack of clarity.
Fields: New opportunities, the beginning of a new endeavor, fertile ground, creative efforts and hard work. Fields may also indicate the fruition of one’s labor and/or actions.
Flowers: Birth, happiness, joy, friendship, giving and receiving. Flowers are also associated with attainment and beauty.
Horizon: The horizon line typically indicates what is in consciousness and what remains in the unconscious.
Lightening: A moment of truth, divine intervention, being struck into consciousness. In a tarot reading, lightening may indicate the need to let go of old ideas.
Mountains: Obstacles, conflicts, life transitions, abstract thoughts. Mountains can indicate that there is spiritual lesson that must be learned. Mountains also refer to the attainment of one’s goals.
Moon: Karma, fate, femininity, intuition. When there is moon in your tarot card reading, it may suggest that you must move into a new level of awareness. The moon signifies the onset of a new phase in ones life.
Paths: The direction of your actions, the karmic journey, the distance it takes to complete a goal or assignment. Paths can also indicate beginnings and endings.
Rain: Catharsis, detoxification, grief, tears, somber meditation, the need for acceptance.
Rocks: Small obstacles, difficult relationships, unforeseen complications. In tarot readings, rocks may also denote denial of a current circumstance or relationship.
Sea: The unconscious, the emotions, dreams, power, mystery, travel. The sea can refer to one’s emotional state within the context of a situation. The sea can also indicate when one’s emotions are ruling over the relational.
Snow: Cold, difficult, isolated, harsh conditions, a time to do nothing, temporary.
Stars: Guidance, a new direction, a time to shine, coming into one’s own.
Sun: Development, growth, happiness, joy, realization, enlightenment, illumination. In a tarot reading, the image of the sun may also indicate a positive foreshadowing of an event to come.
Water: That which is felt and not seen, relationships, love, emotions, the flow of things, mystery, and depth.

DISTINCTIVE SYMBOLS & IMAGERY IN TAROT READING
When I refer to the distinctive features in tarot symbolism, I am referring to the imagery that has repetitive themes throughout the tarot deck. These images are universal in nature and often tap into the collective unconscious. This imagery is embedded with archetypal significance. In a tarot reading, noticeable patterns arise that reflect the current crux of a situation. When there are a number of repetitive symbolic images, this typically refers to a circumstance that requires attention, and depending on the symbolism of the cards, it may indicate which actions to take or what choices are available to you.

Below I have listed the meanings for the most common images associated with the Tarot. Please keep in mind that the imagery in the Tarot differs from deck to deck. Although many decks utilize the recognizable symbolism of the original tarot, others have incorporated new imagery with new interpretations.

Arches: Stability, Support, new beginnings, gateways. In a tarot reading, Arches indicate transitions and they often can reflect new opportunities.
Blindfold: Focus on the inner world. Blindfolds can refer to one’s inability to look at reality.
Boat: Travel, a passage, and a change in direction. Because boats are associated with water they may signify a time for considerate reflection of one’s feelings prior to making a life change.
Bridges: The link between two worlds. Bridges also refer to character strengths such as one’s ability to overcome obstacles with the use of one’s skills.
Castle: Obtaining ones desires, being on the right path, the fruits of our labor. In tarot readings, castles may indicate the need to solidify the foundation of our ideas. It is from these foundations that we can manifest our desires.
Chains: Restriction, being tied to a situation, lack of freedom, bondage, addiction to the material.
Children: Regeneration, promise, hope, innocence. Children can represent the need to find the child within one’s self. They can also signify the need to alter one’s perception and look at the world from new eyes.
Cross: Union between the male and female energies, union with a higher power, and balance.
Fire: Passion, power, destruction, and creativity.
Fountain: Peace, abundance, and harmony.
Hammer: Hard work is required but one possesses all the skills necessary. Should a hammer come up in a tarot reading, there may be the need to communicate ones opinions and thoughts more clearly.
House: One’s concept of self, safety, secrets, protection.
Keys: Opened, closed, locked, imprisoned and freed. Keys refer to all that we block and all that we unlock. They are associated with knowledge and can refer to liberation through wisdom.
Lantern: Search for truth, enlightenment, the presence of the divine in a difficult time, self-exploration, the journey of self-discovery.
Pitcher: The things that you hold dear to you. Purity, nourishment, transformation, and sustenance.
Scale: Balance and equality. Scales can refer to where one is ignoring certain aspects of their life that require attention.
Shield: Guarded, protection, hidden aspects of ourselves. The shield often informs us where we need to restrain from our overindulgences.
Sphinx: The balance between thought and instinct, ancient mysteries, riddles, to guard what is most valuable.
Tower: false ideas, shaky foundations, and apprehension.
Wheel: Cycles, motion, travel, universal energy, and creativity.
Wreath: Attainment, success, wisdom, victory, and protection.

Understanding the Tarot Symbolism of the Crown in Tarot Readings

There are very few tarot decks that fail to depict the symbol of the crown. In tarot reading, crowns can be symbolic of royalty, deities, and divine inspiration. Their presence serves as a reminder of the authority and power of those whom wear them. Crowns can also refer to acts of courage and can represent victory or triumph. They often appear in a tarot reading when there is a need to value one’s own connection to the divine.

The symbol of the crown also has roots in Christianity and, in many tarot decks, there is reference to such an association. In these cases, the crown has sacred or holy implications. Its circular shape is a symbol of perfection. It is also a symbol of divine connection and eternal life. Its Christian heritage lends the idea of the transcendence of one’s soul. That through a divine connection, there is a heavenly realm where all things are perfect. Its circular shape also refers to a ring, one that is worn on the head and represents a union between the world of the divine and the world of man.

The concept of perfection also pertains to one’s inner self. In some cases the symbol of the crown refers to one own sense of self-acceptance and self-worth. Although there is no perfect human being, the idea is to accept that perfection is nothing more than recognizing one’s value regardless of one's flaws. The wearer of the crown is a symbol of self-confidence, control and self-expression.

The crown is a symbol of individuality and one’s ability to be in control of their own life. This includes their feelings, behaviors, ideas and thoughts. The freedom to express one’s individuality is divinely inspired. The possession of the crown ensures that one has the absolute right to rule his own life. The crown is a reminder to utilize one’s own sense of authority as any great ruler would; with justice, tolerance and compassion.

Understanding the Tarot Symbolism and Meanings of the Five Of Pentacles Tarot Card

In Tarot reading, the Five of Pentacles Tarot card can evoke apprehension and concern. For most Tarot readers, the Five of pentacles can represent financial insecurity or struggle. On an emotional level, the five of Pentacles may also represent feelings of isolation or abandonment. However, there is much more to the Five of Pentacles than most people assume. Its Tarot symbolism reflects much more than meets the eye. In truth, the Five of Pentacles Tarot card can be a symbol of faith and love.

The imagery of the Five of Pentacles reflects what looks to be a destitute couple walking beneath a stained glass window in a snow storm. The most obvious symbolism depicted in this card is the stained glass window. Although there is no literal reference to the church or religious sanctuary, one can assume that the stained glass window is part of a holy institution. This symbolism reflects two significant points.

For centuries stained glass has been used as a method for imparting spiritual symbolic images. In the case of the Five of Pentacles, the imagery of stained glass signifies a need to incorporate spiritual principals in one’s life. In Tarot reading, Pentacles reflect the material and earthly possessions. However, Pentacles can also represent one’s value system. When The Five Pentacles appears in a Tarot spread, there is often a suggestion that one needs to look beyond their material world and evaluate their own ethics and morals.

It’s important to note that this process need not be a painful one nor does the Five of Pentacles need to evoke any fear. The Five of Pentacles can be merely a suggestion that one’s point of view has become limited or too secular and they are failing to perceive the world from a spiritual or sacred perspective.

The symbolism of the stained glass also references the concept of faith. In tarot readings, the Five of Pentacles often represents the need to maintain one’s sense of faith during difficult times. More importantly, it serves as a reminder that one must not lose sight of the positives attributes of any given situation.

In love Tarot readings, the Five of Pentacles is not, necessarily, a negative card. In fact, it can represent a relationship that is capable of enduring both the good and the bad. Although things may appear to be at an all time low, the love between two people can carry them through to the other side.

In Tarot Symbolism, Lightning Is A Representation Of A New Way Of Seeing

One of the most powerful cards within the Tarot is the Tower Tarot card. Its imagery is powerful, authoritative and, at times, daunting. As a representation of divine intervention, it heralds a total restructuring of one’s belief systems. It is a reminder that one’s faulty perceptions have led them astray and in order for balance to be achieved once more, there needs to be a letting go of one’s old ways of thinking and behaving.

The Tower Tarot card is one of the only cards in the Tarot deck that depicts lightning as a focal point. In this regard it serves an important purpose. It is the symbol of a divine presence, as if the hand of God has reached down into the mundane, everyday world. With lightening, comes a God consciousness. This is an acknowledgement that there is, indeed, something greater working in one’s life.

The position of the Tower Tarot card suggests that although there is a divine presence, a spiritual cleansing may be in order. Unfortunately, this is not always a pleasant process. The imagery of lightning can represent a conflict, particularly between two opposing forces such as the ego and higher consciousness, the act of giving verses receiving or action verses passivity. In this case, lightning serves as a manifestation of two opposites coming together to form something entirely new: a new direction, a new idea, or new behaviors.

The Tarot symbolism of lightning can also symbolize new ideas or clarity. In the Old Testament, the image of lightning served to represent spiritual awakenings or a sudden moment of clarity in which God was perceived from a real and truthful perspective. For the Tarot, lightning can represent a new way of thinking. Inevitably, there is always change when one’s perspective undergoes such massive shifts. When lightning appears in a Tarot reading, you can always expect a personal transformation.

Tarot Reading: Tarot Symbolism and Meanings of Bridges

In tarot reading, the symbolism of the bridge is not to be taken lightly. In fact, bridges often indicate major transitions in a persons life including important spiritual transformations. The tarot symbolism of the bridge typically represents a journey between two very distinct realms. This can refer both to spiritual principles as well as to different levels of consciousness. A common theme in tarot reading is the significance of becoming conscious of the world of heaven (the Divine) and the world of man. The symbol of the bridge refers to one’s access or ability to transcend the mundane and attain higher levels of higher consciousness. In some cases, the symbol of the bridge references the path to enlightenment or divinity.

Bridges enable us to bypass obstacles. In tarot reading, a bridge can represent a new path, one that is less tenuous or precarious. Symbolically it reminds us that if we get creative, think out of the box, or simply become more aware of our own selves, most difficulties can be overcome. Should you wish to achieve something, there is always a means to reach your goals.

The symbolism of the bridge also refers to the important transitions that occur in our lives. Tarot readings that reveal the image of the bridge often suggest modifications or transformations. Because it symbolizes traveling between two distinct places, it can refer to the critical junctures in one’s life such as marriages, changes in jobs, or a move to a new location. More importantly, bridges can refer to one’s motivations and often represents someone’s desire for change

There is, of course, the bridge's symbolic reference to the passage from life to death. In this case the bridge represents a voyage between two worlds. Bridges can represent a journey into the unknown and ask us to take a leap of faith. In tarot reading, bridges can indicate separation or the inability to go back to where one started. This is particular true in terms of one’s mortality. The bridge serves as a journey into a separate realm, one that separates the living from the dead and the conscious from the unconscious.

Understanding the Tarot Symbolism of the Lantern

The Tarot symbolism represented by the lantern is one of power of intuition, truth and courage. When the image of a lantern reveals itself in a Tarot reading, it usually pertains to hope, healing and the quest for new found enlightenment through spiritual wisdom. The lantern serves to remind us that every dark path has a light. This light is from our inner selves, constantly revealing our own truths and, when adhered to, it always sets us on the right path or course of action.

When the symbol of the lantern represents an individual, we find a person of courage who chooses to live their lives with integrity by upholding their own values. This is an individual who can remain true to themselves regardless of darker impulses or instinctive motivations. They will not bow to or be fooled by outside pressure. In Tarot, the bearer of the lantern will always follow their own path not matter the consequences.

The Tarot symbolism of the lantern can also refer to new found awareness. The lantern often carries the message of revelation, insight or higher knowledge. In this sense, the dispersion of the lantern’s light can be seen as a force that illuminates the mind. This light represents conscious expansion and spiritual growth.

The one card most often associated with the lantern is the Hermit Tarot card. The Hermit often represents the bearer of spiritual wisdom. He can be both a messenger and a receiver of spiritual truths. In Tarot reading, the Hermit represents one’s search for knowledge. While the lantern he holds high bears light, he is still often depicted as being surrounded by cold and darkness. This signifies that he must also learn to be guided by his own truth and intuition. The light from the Hermit’s lantern refers to the spirit within us all. He is the Wise Man archetype, a spiritual teacher who constantly reminds us that many of the answers we are seeking can often be found within our ourselves.

Tarot Reading: Tarot Symbolism & Meanings of Pillars

In tarot symbolism, pillars are associated with masculinity. Pillars are foundations. They are there to provide the core structure and principles on which we should base our lives. In tarot reading, pillars reference concepts of “support” and “endurance”. These often refer to elements in our lives that we must uphold such as our value systems, laws or social responsibilities.

In architecture, pillars are utilized as support systems for buildings and structures. They provide stability for roofs and upper levels of buildings. If their strength or fortitude is compromised in any way, the entire structure is at risk of collapse.

In tarot reading, pillars can refer to the structure of our lives and can remind us to evaluate the vulnerabilities that may threaten our foundations or belief systems. The appearance of a pillar can signify the need to explore the structures of our personalities, life choices, or our relationships.

In tarot symbolism, pillars can also refer to character traits. Pillars represent the type of individual that can hold things together, support others, and endure challenging life trials or circumstances. Pillars can refer to facing important life transitions that truly tests one’s capacity to show up and remain present.

Pillars also serve as gateways or entrances. In this regard, they separate two distinct spaces or dimensions. In tarot imagery, pillars are often depicted in pairs as a means of representing contrasting fields, sacred places, or levels of consciousness. They can also refer to the concept of duality or opposites. Their presence often refers to the concept of balance, particularly between one’s inner drives and higher consciousness.

In tarot reading, pillars (particularly in the reversed position) can carry negative connotations as well. Pillars can be rigid and unyielding. They can serve as a means to block or separate. To this extent, pillars can represent a person or situation where structured rules may be hindering one’s ability to achieve a desired objective.

Water Symbolism and Meaning in Tarot Reading

Water symbolism can be found throughout the Tarot. There are flowing rivers, pouring vessels, great oceans, reflecting pools and flowing streams all of which carry deep symbolic meaning. Water symbolizes life and its very presence calls for a deep appreciation and exploration of its many gifts. Water nurtures, cleanses, heals and soothes. Water can also reflect as well as flow.

When still or reflecting water appears in a tarot reading, it can refer to the need for reflection and self-exploration. Water serves as a mirror. It is deep, dark and mysterious. To see beyond its surface, one must use their intuitive nature to grasp what lies beneath its facade. The same can be said for the process of self-exploration. It requires a willingness to look beneath our own surfaces and discover who we truly are.

The symbol of water also has feminine attributes and often refers to the feminine aspects of the psyche. Because of water’s association to the life force, it symbolically functions as the “great womb” of mother earth. Thus, in the Tarot, water can refer to fertility, birth and creation. It can also refer to the unconscious realm and the world of dreams, both of which are considered to represent feminine attributes.

Water also encourages us to go within. It always serves as reminder that our very souls have depths beyond our conscious perceptions. Symbolically water can represent the realm of our emotions which are constantly flowing and changing. In a tarot reading, flowing water asks us to relinquish our ideas of control and reminds us to go with the flow and follow its path. It represents an emotional surrender and urges one to stop fighting the natural flow of the Universe. If we struggle against it’s currents, we will find ourselves stuck, unable to open ourselves to divine intervention and purpose.

Water gives support, life and energy. It purifies the body and soothes the heart. In tarot, water symbolism always teaches us about our inner beings. Its flow always follows the path of the soul.

The Symbolism of Stars in Tarot Reading

One of the most powerful and beautiful symbols depicted within the Tarot is that of the star. For centuries, the symbol of the star has been used to reference divinity, Intuition, the feminine, hope and guidance. In tarot reading, symbols of the star indicate a need to connect to one’s faith for inspiration and rejuvenation. Stars offer the unique ability to guide us through the night. They can also refer to one’s need to discover their own inner light. Stars exists above us as well as within us. They encourage us to reach beyond our own egos and trust in something much greater than ourselves.

One of the most popular associations to the Star is its reference to our aspirations, dreams and hopes. They represent our ambitions and desires. One of their symbolic functions is to remind us that although things may appear to be out of our grasp, through diligence and faith we can go beyond our limitations. In Tarot reading, stars offer the promise of something better.

Another significant symbolic feature of the Star is it's representation as a pentacle. In Tarot reading, the pentacle is associated with its own suit in the Minor Arcana. This suit is referred to as the Suit of Pentacles. In this regard, pentacles represent the element of earth. Pentacles symbolize everything that occurs within the physical plane: finances, wealth, possessions and health. The Pentacle also refers to manifestation and can symbolize the fruition of one’s ideas or intentions.

Finally, the symbolic function of the Star plays a direct role within the Major Arcana: The Star Tarot Card. In Tarot reading, the Star Tarot card is associated to rebirth and hope. In this case, the Star Tarot card reminds you to connect with the Divine to find harmony, peace, and balance. The Star Tarot card is always an invitation to align one’s self with one’s inner truth and wisdom. It's also a symbol of a divine intervention. Through this connection, one can find renewed hope and faith.

The Symbolism of The Blindfold in Tarot Reading

One of the most powerful symbolic images reflected within the Tarot is that of the blindfold. Blindfolds are barriers, both literally and emotionally. Symbolically, they refer to one’s level of denial or inability to perceive things as they really are. They can represent a distortion of reality and typically refer to lack of insight. With their appearance, there is an element of darkness. They convey a lack of light, insight or inner knowledge. In Tarot readings, blindfolds can refer to our anxieties, fears, and the reluctance to acknowledge important truths.

It’s important to note, however, that there are also positive aspects to blindfolds. In tarot reading, the image of the blindfold reminds us that there is always a light within us. Although the world may appear dark and uncertain, we can find peace and harmony from within our own selves. Blindfolds encourage us to travel through the darkness of our own fear, confusion, uncertainty and lack of faith. In the end, this process can be transformative. Inner strength replaces lack of confidence and apprehension. Our own, personal truths become clearer. We can discover who we really are.

There are two cards in traditional Tarot decks that depict blindfolds: The Two of Swords and the Eight of Swords. There association to the suit of swords proves to further validate their reference to truth. The swords are a suit that “cuts” to the truth regardless of one’s feelings or expectations. However, swords represent the realm of the mind and do not necessarily refer to facts. From this perspective, swords refer to our inner truths and our subjective concept of reality.

In Tarot readings, both the Two of Swords and Eight of Swords refer to an inability to see reality as it really is. In this case, the concept of truth has been distorted or, in some cases, avoided. The Two or Swords refers to a reluctance to perceive situations as they really are. Avoidance has become the solution. The connection between heart and mind has been sacrificed for the comfort of oblivion. The Eight of Swords, on the other hand, refers to the lack of insight. One’s true path has been shadowed by fear and uncertainty. In this case, fear has distorted the truth. Confusion and worry have been self-imposed.

When blindfolds appear in a Tarot reading, there are always important implications. They always require you to look within and find your truth. It is always helpful to ask yourself what you may be reluctant to look at. Blindfolds urge you to connect to your inner light and discover the resources that truly can set your free.

The Symbolism of Armor in Tarot Reading

Armor has been utilized in warfare for centuries. It often serves as the shield between life and death. It is a protective shell that upholds the single most important attribute the Universe has to offer; life. Armor protects all that is precious: our loved ones, our souls, and our will to live. In Tarot, armor plays an important symbolic function. It represents both fortitude and vulnerability.

In tarot readings, armor is not to be taken literally. Rather, it represents various aspects of our own beings. It can refer to courage, tenacity, fearlessness, loyalty and honor. With that being said, it can also refer to our greatest weaknesses. In this case, armor may suggest defensiveness, over-protectiveness, fear, close-mindedness and rigidity. In psychological terms, armor always refers to one’s levels of consciousness and how one relates to the world around them. Armor is both a great asset as well a hindrance. We use it during our life journeys, constantly relying on it as a shield for our everyday struggles or battles.

One important element to armor is its reference to the Warrior archetype. The warrior is the part of our own beings that finds the courage to defend our own boundaries. He is there to help us state our needs. He is with us when we confront the major challenges in our lives. More importantly, he enables us to be the hero within the context of our own lives. The warrior is dependent on his own sense of self, constantly aligning him self with his own value system and his sense of right and wrong. In Tarot readings, he is there to help us find our own voice and assert our truths. The negative element of shadow side of the warrior is when we abandon our principles in the name of victory. At this point there is an indifference or misuse of one’s power that ultimately harms those around us.

In tarot readings, armor serves two primary purposes. The first represents one’s status or feelings of self confidence within the world and the other represents one’s inner sense of self. In this regard, armor takes on a psychological framework. The symbolism or armor represents the unconscious. Within this realm, the unconscious protects the conscious self, often by heightening one’s cautionary actions and stance. For the unconscious, the world may seem dangerous, unreliable or disorganized. As a result, the unconscious puts up shields and barriers. Sometimes this is needed as it prepares one for an important challenge. However, it can also be alienating and sabotaging. In either case, tarot readings that reflect armor need to be examined from all perspectives. The best tarot readings are those that explore the areas in which we need to be warriors as well as explore the areas where we are overly defensive.

The Symbolism of the Horse in Tarot Reading

There is nothing more magnificent than the power of the horse. Horses are truly the bridge between the world of heaven and the world of earth. Throughout time, horses have been associated with strength, victory, nobility, freedom, movement, wisdom and guidance. The horse is the faithful companion. His dedication and affection bring courage and valor. He represents the fire within you. He is your guide, constantly carrying you on your path.

It’s not hard to imagine why traditional Tarot decks include the symbol of the horse. Historically, the symbol of the horse has been incorporated in many myths, legends and fairy tales. The horse is archetypal in nature. It is an image that has its roots in many different cultures and geographical regions. The horse is a symbol that embodies a collective experience. Regardless of one’s background, the image of the horse speaks to all of us.

In traditional Tarot decks, the horse is depicted in 8 separate Tarot cards: Death, The Chariot, the Sun, the Six of Wands and all four Knights. Each card has its own symbolic association to the horse, the most common being that of the Chariot. Horses are also associated with the moon, the sun, and the earth. These are referred to as Lunar, Solar and Physical. In Tarot reading, these represent specific associations to different domains of influence: the unconscious, the spiritual, and all that is tangible in the physical realm. By understanding the use of horse imagery throughout the Tarot, one can discover an entirely new level of interpretation.

Horse Symbolism of the Death Tarot Card
Traditionally, Death is a card of transformation. It signifies the commencement of great change. In this respect, one part of the psyche is dying while another is being born. The significance of the horse is two-fold. The first references his ability to journey within the underworld. It is here, that the horse must travel between life and death. He is the carrier of not only death, but also the soul. The other aspect of Death’s horse is his ability to serve as the trusted guide. It is he that chooses which path to embark upon. Symbolically, he represents our inner guide, the parts of us that inherently need to change or transform. Death’s horse is influenced by the moon. In this regard, the moon is our intuitive sense of knowing.

Horse Symbolism of the Chariot Tarot Card
The Chariot is most commonly associated to the symbolism of the horse. It is the only card in the Tarot deck that depicts two horses, one white and one black. Symbolically, the horses of the Chariot represent the conscious and the unconscious minds. They also depict duality, the concept that within every individual there is both light and dark.
Traditionally, The Chariot is the card of conquest and triumph. He represents the ability to control one’s energy rather than be ruled by it. The depiction of the two horses he drives represents this energy. Symbolically, this relates to the Chariot’s ability to harness his animal instincts. By mastering both the unconscious and conscious parts of the psyche, one can truly find freedom. The Chariot is associated to the sun. In this regard, the sun represents one’s level of consciousness and self-awareness.

Horse Symbolism of the Sun Tarot Card
The Sun card is the representation of psychic unity. The conscious and unconscious minds have reached a level of harmony. The horse of the Sun is the perfect representation of unity. In this case, the horse and rider are one. They are both equal companions on a mutual journey. At last the sun has risen, and there is light. They are on a road to freedom and spiritual enlightenment. Obviously, this is a horse associated to the Sun. In this regard, the sun represents healing and spiritual wholeness.

Horse Symbolism of the Knights Tarot Cards
The knights represent action and courage. They are catalysts to change and always reflect energy or the pursuit of knowledge. The horses that they ride are the embodiments of movement. They also represent the very nature of the knights themselves. They are noble, intelligent, courageous, swift, fearless and willing. They symbolize our every day battles and achievements. The horses of the Knights are associated to the physical realm. This is the realm of intention and action.

Horse Symbolism of the Six of Wands Tarot Card
The Six of Wands is a card of victory and triumph. Here, the horse represents the journey from past to present. More importantly, he can symbolize the future to come. The symbolism of the horse in the Six of Wands also refers to our noble natures. This is the part of us that is willing to fight for what we believe in. On another level, the horse can represent our challenges, obstacles and rivals. In this regard, the horse represents the submission to the rider’s will. The horse of the Six of Wands is also associated to the physical realm. In this regard, it symbolizes our diligence and determination to confront our challenges.

When a horse appears in a Tarot reading, it is always a reflection of energy and direction. Remember that horse and rider make up one whole. The horse lends it powers to help the rider and the rider gives the horse its intention and sense of purpose. Together they are companions embarking on a journey that belongs to them alone.

Understanding The Meaning of Mountains in Tarot Reading

When a mountain appears on a Tarot card, it often implies that there is a spiritual challenge. Mountains encourage us to rise beyond our everyday routines. They are there to remind us that we must look beyond our own selves to find purpose, strength of character and transformation. To journey forward, one must acknowledge their presence and become willing to have a shift in consciousness. They always call for a change in perspective.

Mountains have several important symbolic functions. They can represent the need to overcome challenges, test your strength, expose your vulnerabilities, protect you from danger, humble you and encourage you to rise beyond the mundane. Spiritually, they are there to remind you that you are part of a much larger whole. Their presence is a constant reminder of how our journeys require diligence, devotion and perseverance. In a Tarot reading, they are signifiers of transition and major trials. Symbolically, they can represent the following:

Protection

Higher consciousness

Refuges

Milestones

Change in perspective

Goals and dreams

Inflexible behavior

Challenges

Conflicts

Perseverance

Transformation

Obstructions

Abstract thinking

The ultimate goal of mountain symbolism is to encourage one to look beyond them selves. They bring awe and demand respect. They represent the parts of our journey that always must be addressed and tended to. It’s always important to remember, however, that the Tarot is a tool for one’s own intuition. The interpretation of mountain symbolism comes from one’s own imagination and personal associations. Their true tarot card meanings must, ultimately, be defined by you.
