Tarot Card Meanings: Understanding the Suit of Cups in a Tarot Reading

The suit of cups tends to be my favorite of all the suits. I believe, it is the suit of the “soul” and its language always refers to the emotional aspects of our daily lives. In a tarot reading, the Suit of Cups sheds light on the nature of our current relationships. It often reflects the emotional landscapes of ourselves, as well as gives insight into the emotions to those who are close to us. Because this suit is interconnected with the soul and the soul journey, their tarot card meanings can reveal past traumas that permeate our everyday lives and our perceptions of the world.

Most tarot decks incorporate this suit. However, they are not always represented by the image of the cup. They can also depict cauldrons, goblets, and hearts. Because this suit refers to a container of some kind, the element is water. Water is a symbol of the unconscious, the dream world, and the intuitive natures of our psyches. Water is also a mirror. This mirror reflects our emotional natures, the wounds we have endured, and the gifts we can emotionally give to others. The cups also symbolize the “nurturing” qualities that have influenced our lives and can often reveal where we have emotionally struggled. In a tarot reading, the Suit of Cups can reveal the areas in our lives that our fluid as well as reveal the areas that are stuck. Their tarot card meanings can reflect our overall emotional wellbeing.

In a love Tarot reading, this suit can depict the onset of new relationships as well as the termination of relationships. Depending on the card you pull and where it is positioned, this suit often is associated with love in general. They can be “birth cards”; the birth of a relationship, a new idea, and new actions to embark upon. The flip side to the Suit of Cups is the negative aspects to our emotions. In a tarot card reading, the suit of cups reversed often depicts moodiness, instability, over-indulgence, self-centeredness, and an inclination towards addictions of all kinds. They can also indicate a broken heart, loss and the failure of relationships.

Tarot Card Meanings: Understanding the Five of Cups in a Tarot Reading

The Five of Cups is a card of loss, disappointment and remorse. It often refers to issues of grief. In a Tarot reading, the Five of Cups can indicate an inability to move forward. Past hurts and wounds have not yet been fully processed.

Upright Five of Cups Tarot Card Meanings in a Tarot Reading
The Five of Cups urges one to move beyond their past hurts. It is a warning that a negative outlook about the future is preventing you from moving forward. This is the time to release your regrets of the past. In some cases, the Five of Cups refers to the need for forgiveness. You must be willing to forgive those who have hurt you, and more importantly, forgive yourself.

If you have recently suffered a loss or disappointment, it is important that you work through issues of self-blame and self-defeating attitudes.
The Queen of Cups is highly intuitive. One of her greatest assets is the ability to sense the needs of those around her. In many ways, she is a safe harbor for others. Her ability to connect on a soul level enables her to remedy the broken hearts of others. Her warmth and genuine caring make her a beacon of light. She often represents intuition, divination, and dreams.

Because she is so responsive to the feelings of others, the Queen of Cups must constantly uphold her boundaries between herself and others. If not properly protected, the Queen of Cups can lose her own sense of self. This is her greatest vulnerability.

Tarot Card Meanings: The King of Cups in a Tarot Reading

The King of Cups is mysterious in nature. He can be detached, intense and deep. Emotionally, he is quite receptive but he can, at times, be explosive. He tends to draw people towards him as he has a natural charisma. As a king, the King of Cups often reflects our initiative and desire to get things done. He is a creative soul, always examining things from new perspectives. He is known for thinking outside of the box.

Upright King of Cups Tarot Card Meanings in a Tarot Reading
The King of Cups is highly creative, artistic and compassionate. He is often a reminder to follow your path. In doing so, you can expect emotional well-being and harmony. By directing your creative energies into concrete action, you can set your goals high. Expect proven results. Should the King of Cups focus too intensely on intellectualizing, he can be vulnerable to the detachment of his emotions. Ultimately, this can lead to moodiness and irritability.

Like all cards of the Suit of Cups, the King is associated to one’s emotions and intuition. Unlike the other cards of this suit, however, the King of Cups remains in control of his emotions. He prefers to have some restraint in the expression of his emotions. In an upright position, his tarot card meanings can refer to harmony and stability of one’s emotions.

In a Tarot reading, the King of Cups can indicate a compassionate friend or wise advisor. He is the ultimate listener, often providing a shoulder to cry on. You may be called into a situation where you will be asked to mediate or negotiate. The King of Cups is also associated with business, law, or religious institutions. Business matters go well and your social status will improve. You may be asked to take a leadership role. This is particularly true for positions in one’s church or business.

When dealing with others, it’s important to remain understanding and flexible. It’s also important to explore your own emotions. This is not the time to over intellectualize. Your emotions will lead you to your own truth and will provide insight into the emotions and behaviors of others.

In Love Tarot, The King of Cups represents a wise and compassionate partner. He is emotionally mature and tends to be a great listener.
