Tarot readings primarily work on the principle of intuition. When you read the cards, you are listening to your own inner voice. It’s merely a way to help you find your own answers. On some level, I believe we already know what lies in store for us. Your gut can tell you if you are on or off. Of course there will be some readings where you simply may not be able to identify your own inner voice. That’s quite all right. Not every reading is going to flow. In fact, some of them can feel strained or forced. When this happens, you can always fallback to your basic understanding of the various tarot cards and their meanings. You can also rely on the cards position in the tarot spread to find additional meaning.

Finally, if all else fails, you can always pull some confirmation cards. People generally refer to these as clarifying cards. Clarifying cards are used to help you get more information on a subject or to get validation for a particular interpretation. You can pull clarifying cards during a reading or you can pull them after. Either way, they can ultimately deepen the tarot reading’s message and can certainly confirm as to whether you are on the right track.

The beauty of reading for other people is that it not only helps you to develop your intuition and skills as a reader, it also allows you to connect with others on a both a personal and spiritual level. If you are a beginner, the more you read for others, the more you will develop your skills as a tarot reader by learning how to interpret the various tarot card meanings. If you are apprehensive about your abilities or are just generally a little shy when meeting new people, performing readings for others can also serve to work through any inhibitions and build your confidence.

If you are just beginning, you may not want to read for people who are skeptical, cynical or who may really don’t want to have the Tarot experience. Developing confidence is one of the primary elements needed to become a good tarot reader. You also want to make sure that you are not just wasting your energy. Surprisingly, it does take a certain amount of energy to read. Negative people can sometimes cause your energy to be drained. After such readings you may feel as though your energy levels are low or tapped out.

Another important variable to reading for others is the need to be sensitive as to how people may react. Some people may be very enthusiastic while others may be cautious during their tarot reading. As a tarot reader you need to be prepared for other people reactions. If someone is fearful, you need to be sensitive as to how you interpret the cards. Seeing cards like the Devil card or the Death card can be quite frightening to some people. I often find it helpful to inform people about their meanings. In some cases, I will actually walk a person through the entire reading by sharing my interpretations for each card.

In some cases, people may not react to you at all. This may leave you feeling apprehensive about your own skills as a tarot reader. When this occurs, I find that I must count on the cards themselves do their job. If I find that someone is withholding their reactions on purpose as a way to test my skill level, than I usually just let them make their own judgments about my reading abilities. I try to make sure I’m not trying to “prove” myself to them. This can really affect the reading.  It threatens my neutrality and objectivity.

Sometimes it’s possible to read for someone with you may not be a good a spiritual match. In other words, your energies just may not flow together as effectively as it may with others. This is quite alright. More often than not, however, even the most skeptical of people usually get something out of it.

When you come across a reading that wasn’t as successful as you hoped it would be, you need to let go of any judgment you may have about yourself. Not every reading is going to be a mind blowing experience. This is all part of the process of learning how to read for others.

To begin, let’s first discuss what Tarot Card Spreads are and how they work. A Tarot spread is a configuration or pattern of cards. Each position of the tarot cards in a spread has a specific meaning. Thus, that pattern of a spread provides the framework for a tarot reading. The Tarot reader utilizes the placement of the cards, or the card’s position, with an identified theme. For example, many spreads include positions for the past, present and future. They can also include positions for internal feelings, specific challenges, external factors, and so on.

Once you become familiar with the Tarot, you may want to make up some of your own spreads. As a Tarot reader, it is important to choose spreads that encourage your imagination and intuition. Understanding the placement of the cards is important, but it is just as important to identify the specific spread that works for you as an individual. A spread can be as personal as the tarot cards themselves. Many readers come to rely on specific spreads that work best for them.

In a tarot reading, the cards are shuffled by the person being read. This enables the person to have contact with the cards which transfers their intention to the cards. While the person is shuffling, they are asked to think of a question or issue. The tarot cards are like magnets. They attach to individual energies. If you have discovered a love for tarot reading, there is absolutely no reason why you can’t make a living reading the cards for other people. If you feel confident in your skills, making the leap to becoming a professional is not nearly as difficult as it may seem. The three most important elements to earning a living as a Tarot reader include: your skill at reading the cards, your ability to connect with others, and most importantly, your ability to market yourself.  By far, the most difficult aspect to becoming a professional is self-promotion. While it is true that word of mouth can certainly help to get your name out there, you usually have to get a few happy clients to help get you started.

So how exactly do you get your first clients? I always suggest reading for friends. After you read for your friends, ask them if they have any friends that they can recommend to you. One really successful method is to host a Tarot party. Invite all of your friends and ask them to each bring one guest. Offer free mini readings and make sure you have the opportunity to let your guests know who you are and how long you’ve been working with the Tarot. Make sure you have business cards and leave out a guest book. Get emails! In the future, you can contact people via email with new client specials (another topic).

Believe it or not, a really successful way to attract new clients is to associate yourself with either a metaphysical store or coffee shop. Websites like Craigslist, bulletin boards and local weekly papers are other great places where you can promote yourself at little or no cost. You may not initially generate the income you may want, but you will get repeat clients. Over time, some of them will become loyal customers. More importantly, you will develop relationships with them. This is how one develops a word of mouth clientele. It’s always about your relationships with your clients. Part of being a professional tarot reader includes conducting your business with integrity, honesty and open-mindedness.

Finally, another great method for getting new clients is to rent a booth at psychic fairs or new age conventions. In this type of setting, you are already considered a professional. The good news is that you don’t have to sell yourself as much as you have to in other settings. This is a great arena to really let people see your skills.

Again, you may not generate the type of income you eventually see yourself earning, but it’s a start. Even if you start by doing occasional reading for clients, it can still be a great second income until you feel confident enough in your earning abilities to leave your present job.

Upon looking at the Hanged Man tarot card, one wonders: Did he do this to himself? Is he okay? How did he end up like this? If you are interested in tarot card meanings, the Hanged Man provides a strong universal message that suggests the decision to surrender your life is at your discretion. The Hanged Man tarot card depicts an upside-down man who is tied to the branch of a tree by his right ankle. His bent left leg stretches behind his tied-up leg. A tarot deck consists of 78 cards that are separated into two general groups: the Major Arcana cards and the Minor Arcana cards. The Minor Arcana makes up the majority of the tarot deck consisting of 56 cards. 52 of the 56 cards in the Minor Arcana loosely correspond to the 52 cards found in a regular playing card deck. The remaining four cards are the four page cards, or in some decks, the princess cards. Like a regular playing card deck, there are also knights (e.g. jacks), queens and kings. The other remaining minor arcana cards are numbered one through ten and are referred to as the the pip cards. Pip cards usually are used to represent everyday events or situations in readings.

The 52 Minor Arcana cards are composed of four suits. Learning to read tarot cards does not need to be a difficult process. In fact, it is a quite enjoyable undertaking. The more time you put into understanding the craft of tarot reading, the more you will get out of it.

To begin, you will need your own tarot deck, a notebook and a pen. Choose a place in your home that encourages you to relax. You may want to burn some incense, light some candles, or put some gentle music on. Let go of the day's events. 

When you feel ready, pick up your tarot deck and start shuffling. Try to set your mind free of any fears or expectations. Close your eyes and relax. Take the time to slow your breathing and sit with your feelings. If anything pops out at you make sure to acknowledge it in your journal. Often, when we fail to acknowledge our feelings or issues, our ability to read the cards becomes skewed. Unprocessed emotions have a tendency to cause us to lose objectivity and neutrality.

When you feel at peace, draw a card from anywhere in the deck. Place it down in front of you in an upright position. Take a moment to really examine the card. In your notebook write down the name of the card and answer the following questions when they apply.

• What story does the image you see tell you?
• How does this story apply to your own life story?
• How does it make you feel?
• Does it make you think of any experiences you have had in the past?
• Who is the subject or subjects of the card? What might they say to you? What might they say to each other?
• What other symbolism and imagery appears on the card and what do you think it may represent?
• What’s the message of the card?
• Does the card share a life lesson?

If you are uncertain about a card’s meaning, it is ok to check your interpretation by referencing a book. Keep in mind though that there are no set rules and that the objective is to learn tarot by establishing your own personal understanding and connection to the cards.

After you have completed this task, you will want to note everything you have learned in your journal. The goal is to journal on each card in the Tarot. When you complete this exercise for all 78 cards of the tarot deck, you will have your very own book of tarot interpretations and meanings. You will be able to use this as a resource in the future.

To learn tarot, you simply must be willing to take the time to develop your own relationship to each of the cards. In the end, learning tarot reading is a personal journey. You are always the source of its magic.

The more specific the inquirer is with their question, the better the likelihood that the tarot reading will address their issue in a specific manner. It’s also helpful to keep the question open ended. Open ended questions can reveal hidden or overlooked issues that may have been otherwise missed. Open ended questions can also help the tarot reader discover core issues or other influences that may be affecting the person being read.

5. Shuffling the Cards

There are a number of approaches to shuffling the cards before a tarot reading. This is usually the point where the person being read for will actually touch the cards (although some tarot readers prefer not to have anyone handle their cards). Should you choose to let the inquirer handle the cards, you must make sure that they are instructed to focus on the question at hand while they are shuffling so this energy can get transferred to the cards. There are also different approaches to the “cutting” of the cards; the most popular includes having the inquirer cut the deck three times with their left hand.

6. Knowing Your Tarot Deck

Prior to giving any tarot reading, I always encourage people to take them time to really get to know the tarot deck they will be working with. This not only helps you become comfortable with the cards, it will also deepen your understanding of their meanings and how they relate to each other in a tarot spread. Inevitably, those who will be receiving a tarot reading from you will always pick up on your relationship to your own cards. If you are not familiar with the deck you are working with, chances are it will come through during the tarot reading.

In tarot reading, the path of the Fool is a metaphor for the journey of life. While the interpretations of the Tarot cards can differ from tarot reader to tarot reader, there are many universal themes that remain constant. The more knowledge you have about the Tarot's imagery and symbolism, the easier it will be to grasp their meanings.

Before we move on, however, I would first recommend getting to know your cards intimately. Keep a tarot journal. It is totally acceptable to invent your own tarot meanings. The best tarot readers are the ones that utilize free association. Free association is similar to the concept of a stream of consciousness. During this process you allow your mind to gather information about the cards without any judgment or hesitation. Your ability to read the cards of the Tarot will largely depend on your own intuition. The more you become familiar with the cards, the easier it will be to identify their symbolism and meanings. As I have discussed before, these are images that reflect universal themes. In tarot reading, it is just as important to be familiar with tarot symbolism as it is to trust your intuition.

Now let’s move on. As a beginning tarot reader, I was fortunate to have worked with an expert. She identified elements in the Tarot Cards that had illustrative themes. She taught me how to recognize the significance of distinctive features that comprise the overall picture on each card. After years of study, I have broken these features down into four categories: animals, colors, the landscape, and the distinctive imagery that appears throughout the tarot. It is important to note that there are hundreds of tarot decks. Obviously not all decks have the same imagery. Often, the artist and/or author will develop their own imagery that reflects their interpretation of specific tarot card meanings. That’s what makes the tarot such a fascinating tool for divination. The symbolic interpretations that I will provide are really just suggestions. Ultimately, you, as the tarot reader, will have to rely on your own associations for the tarot cards.

ANIMALS IN TAROT READING
Let’s begin with animals. Animals reflect our instinctive natures. They can expose our primal needs, desires and behaviors. In a tarot reading, animals offer insight into our characters, often shedding light on how are natures and behaviors are influencing a situation.
Birds: Birds are associated with thoughts and spiritual aspirations. Birds in flight represent freedom from limitation.
Bull: Bulls are associated with power, fertility, permanence, charging ahead, and generosity. They can also be associated with stubbornness and denial. Whenever you see a bull in tarot reading, there is typically an association to powerful forces working in ones life.
Butterflies: The image of transformation. Butterflies may indicate a change of thought, change of action, or change of circumstance.
Crab: The crab is the astrological sign of cancer. Crabs are unique because they have mastered their ability to escape a situation by moving sideways. They also can be defensive and overprotective. They have the remarkable ability to move through water, thus they have the tools to move through their emotions.
Dog: The dog is the faithful companion. They represent loyalty and protection. Dogs can also represent the need to have trust and may signify the arrival of a new helper.
Dragon: Dragons represent the use of our intelligence. They symbolize protection and security. Their shedding of their skin can reflect a transformation of some kind.
Eagle: Eagles are the bridge between heaven and earth. In a tarot reading, Eagles can signify the need to look for hidden spiritual truths. Eagles can represent creativity, healing and freedom. They may represent a need for courage.
Fish: The fish is the astrological sign of Pisces. Because fish live in the water, they usually reflect our emotional world. Fish can represent the subconscious, the dream world, creativity and prosperity.
Horse: The horse represents travel and personal power. Typically, when a horse is drawn in a tarot reading, there will be movement. An action might be required or there may be a change in circumstance.
Lion: The lion is the astrological sign of Leo, which rules the heart. Lions represent the need for courage in the face of apprehension. The Lion may also indicate the need to release stress. The lion is a leader and enjoys seeing his supporters achieve success.
Salamander: Salamanders represent the need to connect our emotions with our belief system. When they are drawn in a tarot reading, it may indicate a time to reevaluate our behaviors and perceptions. Do they match up with one’s true feelings?
Snake: The snake typically represents transitions or transformations on one’s life journey. The snake may also represent fertility, the need for a more masculine approach to a situation, and can identify the areas in our life where we may need to adjust and/or adapt.

COLORS IN TAROT READING
In addition to animal symbolism, there is also the use of color in tarot symbolism. Colors can be incredibly useful for identifying tarot card meanings. Color influences our emotions, our behaviors and how we react to various people, things and ideas.

White: Purity, joy, truth, peace, enlightenment, neutrality.
Black: Death, power, emptiness, sorrow. It is the color of night and may refer to things that are hidden. It is also the color of renewal and transformation.
Blue: Feelings, the unconscious, intuition, unity, harmony, reflection, tranquility. It can also represent coldness, depression and mourning.
Green: Fertility, growth, abundance, nature, wealth, money, youth. It is the color of spring and may refer to a new beginning.
Orange: Ambition, action, forcefulness, energy, enthusiasm, security and balance.
Purple: The color of royalty. It represents justice, nobility, mystery, pride and envy.
Red: Passion, strength, anger, sexuality, aggression, danger, masculinity and love.
Yellow: The color of illumination. It represents, joy, happiness, optimism, intelligence. It may also represent weakness, cowardice and fear.
Gold: The color of the universe and sun. It represents realization, success, and spiritual learning.
Silver: Mystery, contemplation, hidden wisdom, femininity and intuition.
Gray: Sadness, mourning, emotional turbulence, humility, old age and dullness.

LANDSCAPE IMAGERY IN TAROT READING
Now that you have grasped the basic symbolism for animals and color, let’s examine the landscape imagery of the Tarot. When I refer to the tarot landscape, I am referring to the background imagery. It's an important element that often gets overlooked. The landscape of the Tarot deepens the interpretations of each card. It provides yet another level of meaning and association.
Clouds: Thought, ideas, divine messages and intervention. Clouds can also indicate confusion and lack of clarity.
Fields: New opportunities, the beginning of a new endeavor, fertile ground, creative efforts and hard work. Fields may also indicate the fruition of one’s labor and/or actions.
Flowers: Birth, happiness, joy, friendship, giving and receiving. Flowers are also associated with attainment and beauty.
Horizon: The horizon line typically indicates what is in consciousness and what remains in the unconscious.
Lightening: A moment of truth, divine intervention, being struck into consciousness. In a tarot reading, lightening may indicate the need to let go of old ideas.
Mountains: Obstacles, conflicts, life transitions, abstract thoughts. Mountains can indicate that there is spiritual lesson that must be learned. Mountains also refer to the attainment of one’s goals.
Moon: Karma, fate, femininity, intuition. When there is moon in your tarot card reading, it may suggest that you must move into a new level of awareness. The moon signifies the onset of a new phase in ones life.
Paths: The direction of your actions, the karmic journey, the distance it takes to complete a goal or assignment. Paths can also indicate beginnings and endings.
Rain: Catharsis, detoxification, grief, tears, somber meditation, the need for acceptance.
Rocks: Small obstacles, difficult relationships, unforeseen complications. In tarot readings, rocks may also denote denial of a current circumstance or relationship.
Sea: The unconscious, the emotions, dreams, power, mystery, travel. The sea can refer to one’s emotional state within the context of a situation. The sea can also indicate when one’s emotions are ruling over the relational.
Snow: Cold, difficult, isolated, harsh conditions, a time to do nothing, temporary.
Stars: Guidance, a new direction, a time to shine, coming into one’s own.
Sun: Development, growth, happiness, joy, realization, enlightenment, illumination. In a tarot reading, the image of the sun may also indicate a positive foreshadowing of an event to come.
Water: That which is felt and not seen, relationships, love, emotions, the flow of things, mystery, and depth.

DISTINCTIVE SYMBOLS & IMAGERY IN TAROT READING
When I refer to the distinctive features in tarot symbolism, I am referring to the imagery that has repetitive themes throughout the tarot deck. These images are universal in nature and often tap into the collective unconscious. This imagery is embedded with archetypal significance. In a tarot reading, noticeable patterns arise that reflect the current crux of a situation. When there are a number of repetitive symbolic images, this typically refers to a circumstance that requires attention, and depending on the symbolism of the cards, it may indicate which actions to take or what choices are available to you.

Below I have listed the meanings for the most common images associated with the Tarot. Please keep in mind that the imagery in the Tarot differs from deck to deck. Although many decks utilize the recognizable symbolism of the original tarot, others have incorporated new imagery with new interpretations.

Arches: Stability, Support, new beginnings, gateways. In a tarot reading, Arches indicate transitions and they often can reflect new opportunities.
Blindfold: Focus on the inner world. Blindfolds can refer to one’s inability to look at reality.
Boat: Travel, a passage, and a change in direction. Because boats are associated with water they may signify a time for considerate reflection of one’s feelings prior to making a life change.
Bridges: The link between two worlds. Bridges also refer to character strengths such as one’s ability to overcome obstacles with the use of one’s skills.
Castle: Obtaining ones desires, being on the right path, the fruits of our labor. In tarot readings, castles may indicate the need to solidify the foundation of our ideas. It is from these foundations that we can manifest our desires.
Chains: Restriction, being tied to a situation, lack of freedom, bondage, addiction to the material.
Children: Regeneration, promise, hope, innocence. Children can represent the need to find the child within one’s self. They can also signify the need to alter one’s perception and look at the world from new eyes.
Cross: Union between the male and female energies, union with a higher power, and balance.
Fire: Passion, power, destruction, and creativity.
Fountain: Peace, abundance, and harmony.
Hammer: Hard work is required but one possesses all the skills necessary. Should a hammer come up in a tarot reading, there may be the need to communicate ones opinions and thoughts more clearly.
House: One’s concept of self, safety, secrets, protection.
Keys: Opened, closed, locked, imprisoned and freed. Keys refer to all that we block and all that we unlock. They are associated with knowledge and can refer to liberation through wisdom.
Lantern: Search for truth, enlightenment, the presence of the divine in a difficult time, self-exploration, the journey of self-discovery.
Pitcher: The things that you hold dear to you. Purity, nourishment, transformation, and sustenance.
Scale: Balance and equality. Scales can refer to where one is ignoring certain aspects of their life that require attention.
Shield: Guarded, protection, hidden aspects of ourselves. The shield often informs us where we need to restrain from our overindulgences.
Sphinx: The balance between thought and instinct, ancient mysteries, riddles, to guard what is most valuable.
Tower: false ideas, shaky foundations, and apprehension.
Wheel: Cycles, motion, travel, universal energy, and creativity.
Wreath: Attainment, success, wisdom, victory, and protection.

For centuries, the Tarot has been identified with the mystical occult. They are perceived as a magical force with the power to influence and control one’s life. In truth, the Tarot cards are merely tools for tapping into one’s own intuition. Their true power lies in their ability to help us identify the areas in our lives that we must address as well as identify the areas were need to personally grow. They always reflect our current challenges and our current level of self-development. Their true power comes from our own, inner beings. They are guides for self-discovery and utilizing them improves our ability to develop self-awareness. Ultimately, they can aid us in discovering who we truly are and guide us towards self-realization.

The most common concern when approaching the Tarot as a beginner is learning to interpret the their Tarot card meanings. Most people tend to feel that this can be a daunting and overwhelming process. It doesn’t have to be. Learning the Tarot is a personal journey. Their Tarot card meanings can be as personal as you wish to make them. More importantly, there is no right or wrong approach to learning the Tarot. As I stated before, they are tools. You are free to get creative as you want. In the end, their true Tarot card meanings will be your personal associations to them.

There are three elements that can aid you when you begin the process of learning to read Tarot Cards. The first is learning how to trust yourself. The second is choosing a deck that speaks to you. And the third, and most vital, is learning how to apply meaning to each card.
 
An Element of Trust
As a beginner Tarot reader, it may be difficult to trust your interpretations. That is quite O.K. and it certainly is part of the process. In fact, professional tarot readers can encounter this dilemma. To battle these feelings if uncertainty, it may be helpful to understand how the Tarot works.

Tarot imagery and symbolism has universal themes. These themes reflect the experience we all encounter on our journeys through life and self-development. These are the common themes and experiences we instinctively understand. C.G. Jung explained this phenomenon as the experience of the Collective Unconscious. The Collective Unconscious dwells within the realm of the unconscious mind. It is from this source that we connect to all mankind; in one collective experience. It is an inherent understanding of a shared experience. We can identify our shared experiences through archetypal imagery. These are universal images and visual patterns that are repeated over and over. They appear throughout history.

When approaching the Tarot, you can trust your instincts. Your gut reaction is always your best guide. The archetypal images throughout the Tarot will, without doubt, trigger associations. This may be through a personal experience or a collective experience. In either case, it truly does not matter which source feeds your intuition. You just need to listen to your inner voice. This is where the element of trust becomes essential. Your associations to the various Tarot card meanings are just as valid as anyone else, including professional tarot readers. Remember, there is no wrong or right association. The guidance from the Tarot always comes from within your own self. Enjoying the process.

Choosing your first Tarot deck may seem like an intimidating process, particularly since there are hundreds of decks to choose from. Apart from Tarot decks, there are also other forms of divination cards such as oracles cards, wisdom cards, gypsy cards and healing cards.  The ultimate goal in choosing a deck is finding the deck that you resonate with. Contrary to popular belief, you do not need to be giving your first Tarot deck. If that were the case, I probably never would have embarked on the Tarot journey. No rules or rituals are required. You can simply choose any deck that personally speaks to you.

First of all, there is no right or wrong approach to choosing a deck. You can simply begin your process by exploring what’s out there. I always encourage people to begin this undertaking with a little research. The first approach would include looking up various tarot decks on the internet. This is a great way to explore the various symbols and iconography depicted in the Tarot. Every artist tends to have their own interpretation. Some artists choose to remain loyal to traditional symbolism while others will develop their own unique interpretation for the Tarot cards. In either case, it’s important to discover what moves you. When I find myself drawn to a particular deck’s imagery, I usually ask myself what is it about this deck that makes me want to learn more. Is it the design, color, symbolism or overall feel? Do I identify with the pictures? Can I relate to them? What do they make me feel?

Learning to identify your own feelings about particular decks can certainly help you narrow down your options. You may also, however, need to see the cards first hand. The best places to buy Tarot decks locally are at metaphysical stores and bookstores.  Metaphysical stores tend to have more decks and have samples that you can handle. Bookstores tend to carry a smaller number of Tarot decks and they typically do not allow you to open them. It’s always great to review a deck’s imagery, but if you are limited, you can certainly get a “feel” for a tarot deck just by handling it within its packaging.  You may be drawn to the size or the weight of a particular deck and, in some cases; you just may get the right feeling about a particular deck when you see it or handle it in person.
 
It’s also really important to understand what kind of deck you are drawn too. If it is a divinatory deck that is not related to Tarot such as oracle cards or angel cards, it is quite all right to choose this as your deck. However, their interpretations will not be the same as those in the Tarot. Usually, these decks have an accompanying book or pamphlet that discusses the cards significance and meanings. Traditional Tarot decks have a total of 78 cards. Depending on the type of Tarot deck it is, their visuals may differ, but there overall purpose is the same.  The most unique attribute to Tarot cards is their ability to guide you through your life challenges by helping you discover who you are.
 
Finally, should you feel unable to choose a deck to your suiting, stick to the more traditional decks such as the Rider Waite, Morgan Greer, or Aquarian Tarot. The imagery depicted in these decks is the most common. Most Tarot books will utilize similar imagery for their interpretations. As you get to know the cards and feel more comfortable with their meanings, you can add to your collection of Tarot decks. At some point, you may wish to explore a deck that is more meditative or abstract in nature. The most important thing to remember is that the Tarot helps you tap into your intuition. In the end, let your own intuition be your guide.

For many Tarot enthusiasts, consulting the Tarot for guidance through life is a common practice. For those who have issues with their current career path, the Tarot can provide a lot of insight. These can include such issues as taking appropriate business actions, how to resolve a work related conflict, or how to advance within an existing or new career. Moreover, the Tarot can even help you discover what type of career personality you are predisposed to. In this regard, you can learn about your greatest assets and potential vulnerabilities.

For the purpose of discovering your career personality type, it is always best to work with the Major Arcana. Each card within the Major Arcana signifies an individual's tendency towards certain work related personality traits as well as their potential strengths and weaknesses on the job. You can conduct a tarot reading to determine your career personality using a simple three card tarot spread. However, in this case, you are not seeking answers to a particular question. Rather you are drawing the cards to reflect what type of career type you possess.

To determine your career personality type, you must draw three cards from the Major Arcana. These three cards represent your three primary personality traits including your areas of strength as well as your possible weaknesses. To begin, shuffle the Major Arcana and pull three cards and lay them on the table before you. It does not matter if they are forward or reversed. Tarot Reading with children can be a difficult task. Obviously, children require a certain level of sensitivity and understanding. Bombarding them with sophisticated theories or interpretations can be confusing, intimidating and overwhelming. To expect to communicate with a child on the level that is beyond them is not only ineffective but can be potentially harmful.

For the most part, online tarot readings are cost effective. There are a number of internet sites that offer free tarot readings. This enables you to both choose a deck that resonates with you and pick a tarot spread that focuses on your particular area of interest.

Live tarot readings, on the other hand, are almost never free. Although live tarot readings are not nearly as cost effective as online tarot readings, they do provide you personal contact with a professional tarot reader. Professional tarot readers tend to be much more direct and use their own intuitive skills to answer your questions or concerns.

The greatest disadvantage to online tarot readings is their tendency to be impersonal and over-generalized. There may also be specific spreads that work better for you than others. By designing your own Tarot spread, you can frame a Tarot reading towards your particular style. More importantly, a personal spread connects you to the Tarot. It does this by allowing the Tarot to speak to you in your own language and philosophical viewpoint. Regardless of your motivation, there a number of approaches that can help you design your own spread.

There are times in which a specific problem calls for a certain type of spread. In these cases you need to examine the true nature of the problem. It’s important to understand the underlying issues that are at hand. For example, is the Tarot reading about love, spirituality, money, career, or health? Tarot spreads are largely dependent on the types of areas you wish to focus on. There are times when certain areas of focus can overlap and, in these cases, it’s important to remain flexible.

Tarot spreads can be broken down into as many components that are necessary. For example, if you choose to do a health Tarot reading, you could include as part of your spread a design that focuses on how the health issue in question are effecting the nature of relationships with others. To do this, you could place a card within the Tarot spread that highlights how those around you may be adapting or influencing your health issues. Ultimately, your own designs can be both practical and intuitive. You need to be aware of the issues that need to be addressed from a practical point of view and allow your intuition to guide you towards the issues that you feel require attention.

As you develop your own design for a Tarot Spread, you need to determine a meaningful pattern. In other words, which cards get placed in which positions? Which card goes first and which card comes last? This is the most personal element in designing your own Tarot spread. This process depends on your own associations to the design you choose. For example, do straight lines refer to time? Do circles refer to cycles? Below I have noted some quick references that may help you in your process.

The most important thing to remember when designing your own Tarot spreads is to allow your creativity and intuition be your guide. There is no right or wrong Tarot spread. The goal is to design a Tarot spread that reflects your own approach to problem solving and self-discovery. Get creative and allow the Tarot to work for you.

If you go into any metaphysical bookstore you will very likely find several books on the Tarot. They can be a valuable tool for the beginning Tarot reader. However, as you become increasingly familiar with the Tarot and tarot reading, you will find that you will interpret tarot card meanings less and less from what you have read in books, and more and more from your own personal interpretation of the cards. In the end, you will find that the best and most experienced Tarot readers are always the one’s who utilize their own personal associations to the cards.

Just as every individual has their own, unique point of view, Tarot reading offers you the insight to truly understand and interpret your own, personal story. It does this by illuminating the nature of your purpose and identifying how your story has framed your own view of the world. The more you become conscious of your story, the more you can understand yourself. This process you can also help you to understand the story of others. When we identify with another person’s experience, we can gain a deeper understanding of our shared experience. This is our humanity.

As a Tarot reader, it’s important to be able to identify where your story ends and another person’s begins. Neutrality and objectivity will be your greatest allies in Tarot reading, particularly if you are reading for someone other than yourself. It’s also important that you become conscious of your own projections. In other words, you do not want to project your story onto someone else's. One way to ensure that you don’t do this is by committing yourself to your own process of self-discovery. Tarot reading can help you do this by reflecting your own story back to you.

The following exercise can be very useful for this process:

Separate the 22 Major Arcana cards out from the rest of the deck. Begin first with the Fool Tarot Card followed by the rest placed in numerical order. Thus, the Fool would be followed by the Magician, The Magician would be followed by the High Priestess, etc…

Next, take out a piece of paper and examine the first card: The Fool Tarot Card. Ask yourself the following question:

• What is the story of the Fool?
• Where have I been the Fool?
• Where does my story differ from the Fool? Where is it the same?
• If the Fool where to speak to me, what might he say to me? What might I say to Him?
• What might the Fool say to the card that follows him? In this case, it would be the Magician.

You can continue this narrative throughout the Major Arcana until you finish with the World Tarot card. Allow each card to tell you a story. In turn, you can use the cards to tell your own story. The ultimate purpose of this exercise is to help you identify your own story and life journey. This exercise can also deepen your understanding of tarot cards meanings.

This exercise is also a great way to interpret the cards for those for whom you may be reading. Knowing traditional interpretations can be useful, but there is nothing more powerful than letting the Tarot cards speak for themselves.

One of the most powerful symbolic images reflected within the Tarot is that of the blindfold. Blindfolds are barriers, both literally and emotionally. Symbolically, they refer to one’s level of denial or inability to perceive things as they really are. They can represent a distortion of reality and typically refer to lack of insight. With their appearance, there is an element of darkness. They convey a lack of light, insight or inner knowledge. In Tarot readings, blindfolds can refer to our anxieties, fears, and the reluctance to acknowledge important truths.

It’s important to note, however, that there are also positive aspects to blindfolds. In tarot reading, the image of the blindfold reminds us that there is always a light within us. I always suggest using a three ring note book. This allows you the freedom to move the pages around or separate them into categories. They represent our levels of self-development and reveal major life transitions. In Tarot readings, the Major Arcana reveal the karmic and consequential lessons you must grasp in order to move forward.

To begin, separate the 22 Major Arcana cards out from the Tarot deck. Although the Fool Tarot Card is associated number is zero, he can be placed in the beginning or end of the twenty-two Major Arcana Cards. As you grasp the Fool Tarot card, allow yourself to explore the image. What stands out for you? What message does he wish to tell you? Here are some helpful questions that can help you in this process.

• What are the colors? What do these mean to you?
• What symbolism sticks out to you? What do these mean to you?
• What does the landscape reveal?
• Is there any vegetation? What does this mean to you?
• What is the “feel” of this card?
• Are there any animals?

The list of question can go on and on. In time, you will develop your own system of exploration. The important thing to remember is to let the cards speak to you. Your Tarot journal is there to record your thoughts and feelings. As you gain a deeper understanding of the Tarot cards, your own associations will begin to make perfect sense and, ultimately, your ability to perform tarot readings will become second nature.

Evolution of the third eye has long been linked to the psychic reader’s development of higher vision.  As with other areas of spiritual development, awakening of the third eye requires belief, commitment, practice and patience. The way in which the third eye is used relates to the possibilities available when the psychic reader embraces their third eye.

The third eye or pineal gland is considered to be the organ of higher vision. Use of the third eye is paramount to a psychic reader. It is also extremely useful for Tarot reading. 1. Make sure you find a time in the day where you will not be disturbed. Find a comfortable and quite place to sit crossed legged. You may also sit against a wall or on a chair. Make sure your back is straight.
2. Close your eyes and slow your breathing. Inhale deeply and exhale through your mouth. Try to relax your body.
3. Position your chin downward towards your chest. Imagine your chest is pulling your chin towards it.
4. Keep breathing deeply. It is sometimes useful to count to three every time you inhale. With every breath, imagine your body getting more and more relaxed.
5. With your eyes closed, look up towards your third eye. This Third Eye is located in the center of your forehead. If you want, you can visualize the Third Eye chakra as an actual eye. See it slowly begin to open. It should feel as though you are actually looking up, but your eyes should remain closed.
6. Continue breathing and relax your eyes while they are “looking up.” You may notice changes in your body and mind. This is fine. This is the beginning of the psychic trance. If you are having difficulty maintaining this, go back to step b. Keep working on relaxing your body and slowing your breath.
7. Attempt to hold this for a few minutes. If your mind begins to wander, there is no need to pass judgment. If you lose focus, than begin the process all over again.

With practice, your Third Eye Chakra will eventually open. Slowly, you will begin to experience new levels of consciousness. You may start to notice small things that you have previously missed. You may discover a new awareness to detail. Ultimately, your ability to interpret the Tarot cards during a Tarot reading will become constant and easily accessible.

You may think you are present. I recently have been working with Kat Black’s, Golden Tarot Deck. This deck is simply gorgeous. Although its imagery is somewhat traditional, Kat Black does incorporate some unusual interpretations. This is particularly true for the Death Tarot Card. In her version, the Death card depicts a sleeping woman, pale and subdued. I assume this references a literal death. However, I also associate this imagery with a deep slumber. Her eyes are closed and she holds a flower. Surrounding her there are angels dressed in black, and above her a winged skeleton spreads its arms.

Traditionally, Death, the Tarot card of transformation, signifies the commencement of profound change. In a Tarot reading, the Death card indicates that another life cycle has ended and a new cycle has begun. It can refer to the completion of important life stages or relationships. However, it often symbolizes metamorphosis. It is the rebirth of one’s psyche. Old beliefs and ideas are discarded for new ones. In essence, it is a metaphorical death not a literal one. In a tarot reading, Death refers to a transformation that occurs at one’s deepest core.

Yet as I peer into Kat Black’s image, I do not fully identify with this traditional explanation. I am drawn to the angels attempting to raise a young maiden back into life. They are beckoning her to wake up, to once again embrace life. Their small hands reach for her eyes and mouth. I can imagine them whispering to her, “Open your eyes and speak your truth.”

Perhaps, the Death Tarot card is telling us more. We would be foolish to deny one important element to the concept of Death. Death references our own mortality. It is an underlying fear that lies within all of us. We all want to live. In fact, we tend to avoid the very thought of it. At some point in our lives, we need to accept its inevitability. In this context, the Death Tarot card urges us to face our fears. We must come to accept our own mortality. Once we accomplish this, life takes on new meaning. Life, indeed, becomes much more precious.

Perhaps the Death Tarot Card is a wake up call. It is reminding us to open our eyes and embrace the world around us. In this regard, it may refer to our own lack of perspective. Are we missing the bigger picture? Does our life have meaning? Are we failing to see the beauty in our relationships? Kat Black’s imagery is truly an invitation. She beckons us to open are eyes and speak from our hearts. She reminds us to shift our consciousness and embrace the divine that is within all of us. In this regard, Death is truly the transcendence of one’s level of awareness and perceptions, forever reminding us to wake up to the world around us.
